Logistics & Specialized Services Technician

Location: Upper East Side, NYC • Non-Exempt • 35 hours/week, Monday–Friday • Salary range: $27.69 – $31.26

About the role

Under supervision, assists with the receipt and transport of research animals as well as the maintenance and service of specialized animal equipment. This role also provides husbandry and health care to aquatic research animals and gnotobiotic animals.

Responsibilities

• Provides husbandry to animals maintained in isolators and aquatic animal species.
• Performs regular isolator maintenance, including leak tests, cleaning, breaking down and setting up isolators, and decontamination in preparation for housing germ-free animals.
• Maintains and troubleshoots aquaculture systems; reports failures/alarms to supervisor.
• Assists investigators with experimental procedures such as breeding, larval rearing, embryo collection, maintenance of required lines/stocks, cesarean rederivation, and other services as required.
• Collects diagnostic and environmental samples; administers euthanasia when directed.
• Recognizes and reports conditions of animal health and welfare that deviate from normal for the species.
• Receives incoming animals, verifying species, strain, sex, health status, and order accuracy; notifies investigators of receipt per established protocols.
• Ensures proper documentation of animal receipt and transfer in compliance with federal mandates; supplies data for annual reports.
• Transports and delivers animals to designated rooms across various sites following standard operating procedures.
• Disassembles, reassembles, and coordinates washing and sterilization of caging and related equipment.
• Performs light carpentry and minor equipment installations in the vivarium as needed.
• Maintains inventory of supplies, equipment, and reagents; may order authorized items or escalate needs.
• Receives and confirms accuracy of supply orders; may assist with cost control.
• Ensures adherence to animal care and environmental policies and procedures at all times.
• Monitors and maintains laboratory facilities, including animal holding areas, cage wash areas, and associated corridors.
• Assesses caging equipment conditions and recommends replacements or repairs.
• Documents job duties and weekly animal census.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Approximately one year of experience in the care of laboratory animals or aquatic species.
• AALAS Certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level or higher.

Skills

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Working Conditions

• Full mobility required; ability to regularly lift or move up to 25 pounds and frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds.
• Extended periods of standing; ability to climb and work from ladders and platforms.
• Exposure to dust, dirt, unpleasant odors, laboratory animals, animal excreta, and hot/humid environments.
• Potential exposure to animal bites/scratches, needles/sharp instruments, infectious agents, radioisotopes, toxic chemicals, and radiation.
• Protective equipment (uniforms, steel-toe shoes, masks, aprons, gloves, head covers) provided and required for specific activities.
• Work assignments may include weekends and holidays.
