Log Scaler
About the role
Hood Industries, Inc. is a blend of wood manufacturing and distribution concerns that include plywood and lumber manufacturing plants, and twenty-three specialty wood product distribution operations, located in fifteen states serving the northeast, southeast, and southwest United States. We are seeking a motivated and dependable Log Scaler for our plywood manufacturing facility in Beaumont, MS. This position plays an important role in supporting mill operations by inspecting, weighing, measuring, and documenting incoming log loads to ensure raw materials meet quality specifications. The Log Scaler will work closely with log yard employees and equipment operators to help maintain a safe and efficient flow of raw materials into the mill.
Responsibilities
- Safely inspect, weigh, and record data for all trucks and traffic entering the mill site across the scales.
- Monitor all truck drivers for log yard safety compliance.
- Ensure scales are functioning properly and conduct weekly scale calibrations.
- Conduct and maintain an accurate piece count for each load.
- Measure and/or estimate the average length for each load.
- Physically walk loads and conduct log rollouts as necessary to perform quality inspections.
- Make appropriate weight deductions and reject loads as necessary.
- Visually inspect log loads to ensure compliance with company log quality specifications.
- Distinguish between acceptable pine species and hardwood.
- Distinguish between pulpwood, chip-n-saw, woods run, and logs.
- Identify, weigh, and document all purchase shavings.
- Maintain complete and accurate scale tickets, records, and other required documentation.
- Prepare, complete, and distribute required daily reports and scan daily scale tickets into the system.
- Communicate with the Log Loader Operator regarding log placement and proper assignment within the computer system.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area inside and outside the scale house, including routine housekeeping as necessary.
- Maintain awareness of needed scale house supplies and notify the appropriate person when supplies need to be reordered.
- Communicate professionally and effectively with truck drivers, employees, and others as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma/GED preferred.
- Six months to one year of related experience or training or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
- Basic computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
- Ability to accurately enter data into computer systems and prepare required reports.
- Strong basic mathematical skills.
- Ability to perform and read physical log measurements using a stick scale to measure log diameter.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and quality of work.
- Reliable attendance and the ability to work scheduled hours, including Saturdays as required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to frequently stand and walk for extended periods, including on uneven surfaces and around log loads.
- Ability to squat, climb, bend, stoop, stretch, twist, and reach as necessary to inspect and measure logs.
- Ability to use hands and arms to operate measuring equipment, computers, scales, and other equipment required for the position.
- Ability to lift and/or carry up to 30 pounds throughout the work shift.
- Ability to safely perform assigned duties in an outdoor manufacturing and log yard environment.
Pay
Hourly rate: $20.62
