About the role

The successful candidate will join a team of dedicated consultant respiratory paediatricians, delivering high-quality respiratory care to children in the North East and North Cumbria region. The post includes consultant-of-the-week and on-call responsibilities, general respiratory outpatient clinics, and specialist respiratory clinics. The distribution of specialist interest areas will be agreed between the department and the successful candidate.

Responsibilities

• Provide ‘on-call’ respiratory paediatric care for all paediatric inpatients at GNCH and FRH.
• Oversee and report sleep studies and other physiological investigations.
• Manage the care of children receiving long-term ventilation at home, including inpatient, outpatient, and home visits.
• Ensure quality assurance of sleep and physiological investigations.
• Contribute to the complex airway service in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Specialist duties may include additional areas, dependent on experience and departmental need.

Requirements

Education, Qualifications, and Specialist Skills

• Essential:
  • Primary Medical Qualification.
  • Full GMC Registration.
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC).
  • MRCPCH or equivalent.
  • Evidence of training in PRM.
• Desirable:
  • Higher Degree.
  • Special skills training in the specialty.
  • Leadership and management experience.

Clinical Experience

• Essential:
  • Evidence of experience in the specialty.
  • Evidence of a substantial commitment to the specialty.
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the specialty.
  • Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary centre.

Management and Administration Experience

• Essential:
  • Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty.
  • An understanding of Clinical Governance.
• Desirable:
  • Proven management and administrative experience and understanding of management goals.
  • Evidence of leadership/project management.
  • Evidence of having implemented change.
  • Experience in developing and implementing new technologies.
  • Evidence of involvement in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines.

Teaching

• Essential:
  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
  • Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Ability to teach clinical/technical/practical skills.
• Desirable:
  • Attendance at courses to develop teaching skills.
  • Postgraduate qualification in medical education.

Research

• Essential:
  • Evidence of involvement in and understanding of research methodology and publication of findings.
  • Research/critical review of literature.
  • Publications in the last five years.
• Desirable:
  • Higher degree.

Quality Improvement

• Essential:
  • Evidence of participation in quality improvement.
• Desirable:
  • Evidence of having changed practice as a result of quality improvement.
  • Evidence of having revisited the audit to assess improvement.
