About the role

The Rock Island District's Operations Division oversees the safe, reliable, and efficient operation and maintenance of navigation channels and lock and dam sites along the Upper Mississippi River and Illinois Waterway. They are currently seeking experienced professionals to serve as Lock and Dam Operators at five designated locations.

Responsibilities

• Working under the direction of a head lock and dam operator and other senior lock staff
• Operating lock and dam gates, control valves, and other associated equipment
• Making minor repairs to lock and dam equipment
• Gathering and recording essential data from boat pilots regarding cargo and travel details
• Assisting in the installation, repair, and maintenance of lock machinery and equipment
• Utilizing various hand and power tools
• Demonstrating and enforcing safety regulations and methods to avoid hazards

Requirements

• Ability to perform common lock and dam operations tasks including operating lock and dam equipment, making minor repairs, applying locking procedures, and maintaining safety regulations.
• To qualify for the WY-05 level: Document experience and/or show the ability to perform common lock operations tasks and utilize mechanical or electrical equipment.
• To qualify for the WY-07 level: Complete Parts 1 and 2 of IMTS training.
• To qualify for the WY-08 level: Be IMTS certified.

Qualifications

• Must be a citizen of the United States.
• Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must register for Selective Service.
• May be required to maintain a valid state Driver's License.
• May be required to maintain an American Red Cross Standard First Aid card, CPR, and/or AED in good standing.
• May be required to wear a uniform and/or protective clothing.
