Multiple permanent Lock and Dam Equipment Mechanic positions are available at the full performance levels (FPLs) of WY-10 and WY-11 across several locations in the Great Lakes and Ohio River Division, Pittsburgh District.

Responsibilities

WY-10 Level

• Rebuilds lock and dam operating systems, machinery, and related equipment at navigational facilities.
• Installs new equipment and performs maintenance, repair, overhaul, or replacement of parts, systems, and equipment associated with building, grounds, and utilities.
• Maintains project administrative maintenance records for preventive maintenance and repairs of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems, mobile land plant, floating plant, and inventory.

WY-11 Level

• Implements and maintains scheduled and unplanned/emergency inspections, test operations, preventive maintenance, and repair/replacement of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, and mechanical interrelated/interlocking equipment and controls.
• Repairs electrical, electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment using diagnostic tools, measuring devices, and other systems.
• Inspects, troubleshoots, and disassembles mechanical operating equipment and associated equipment at navigation structures (e.g., large mobile cranes, bulkhead hoists, generators, pumps, compressors, speed reducers, hydraulic pumps).

Requirements

WY-10 Minimum Qualifications

• Ability to perform work without more than normal supervision.
• Experience in installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of machinery, structures, utilities, and other facilities related to navigation structures.
• Experience using methods, tools, and techniques of trades and crafts such as carpentry, painting, masonry, mechanics, concrete/steel fabrication, heavy equipment overhaul and repair, welding, and/or electrical repair and installation.

WY-11 Minimum Qualifications

• Ability to perform work without more than normal supervision.
• Experience in repairs and major overhauls of equipment and systems featuring electric, electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic controls.
• Experience inspecting, servicing, maintaining, and repairing equipment such as gasoline engines, boat motors, chain saws, lawn mowing equipment, pumps, generators, electric carts, compressors, tractors, building electrical systems, utility, heating, or cooling systems.

Physical Effort and Working Conditions

• Work requires frequent standing, stooping, stretching, climbing, and crouching.
• Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Uses coordination of eyes, hands, and feet, as well as legs and body, in confined areas such as manholes.
• Climbs ladders and poles.
• Work is performed both inside and outside during day and night, including emergencies, on high structures over turbulent water, near moving machinery, high-tension electrical wires, and on scaffolds or slings.
• Occasionally works behind bulkheads or in tunnels below water level.
• Subject to falls, drowning, electrical shocks, injury, discomfort, exposure to moving equipment, loud noises, inclement weather, and dangerous icy conditions.
• Uses safety equipment such as life vests, protective hearing devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, respirators, and protective clothing.

Conditions of Employment

• One-year probationary period may be required.
• Appointment subject to suitability or fitness determination, including a completed background investigation.
• Position is designated as Non-Sensitive with no access to security clearance.
• Covered by the civilian drug abuse testing program; required to sign a DA Form 5019-R.
• May be designated as Mission Essential, requiring work during emergency situations.
• May require an American Red Cross Standard First Aid card, CPR, and/or AED certification.
• May require wearing a prescribed uniform based on site-specific requirements.
• May require a valid state driver’s license.
• Must observe established safe working procedures; use of protective clothing and equipment is mandatory.
• May require acquiring and maintaining Corps of Engineers equipment operating licenses.
• Requires lifting and carrying materials weighing 50 pounds or more; pre-employment physical exam required.
• U.S. citizenship is required.
• Position is Non-Exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act.
• Direct deposit of pay is required.
