About the role

As a Locates Maintenance Technician, you’ll use advanced locating equipment, utility maps, engineering plans, and aerial imagery to accurately identify and mark buried fiber, water, sewer, reclaimed water, and stormwater assets. This position is 100% in-person and not eligible for remote work.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and mark buried fiber, water, sewer, reclaimed water, and stormwater infrastructures by referencing utility prints and using specialized locating equipment.
  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment and tools used to locate underground utilities.
  • Read, understand, and interpret utility maps, engineering design plans, prints, and aerial imagery to assist in identifying Town-owned underground utility assets.
  • Prioritize work activities by reviewing locate requests to determine travel routes and timelines.
  • Conduct field meetings with contractors, customers, and representatives from outside agencies to identify utility line locations.
  • Operate handheld detection equipment and mark underground utility assets on roadways, private property, and other surfaces using spray paint, flags, or other marking devices.
  • Maintain and update records and construction drawings to comply with state accuracy requirements.
  • Manage, inspect, and maintain permanent marking posts for Town-owned underground utilities outside roadways.
  • Operate computers, tablets, and portable GPS units.
  • Ensure problems are corrected in a timely and effective manner.
  • Work in all types of terrain and weather conditions while maintaining professionalism under stressful situations.
  • Perform snow removal activities by hand, small equipment, or heavy equipment as assigned.
  • Complete documentation for each utility locate ticket.
  • Stay current with new utility locating equipment, GIS and mapping systems, and GPS technology.
  • Update staff on field discrepancies to improve Town of Erie Utility GIS mapping.
  • Perform data entry for maintenance logs and related software.
  • Respond to customer and contractor inquiries and complaints.
  • Prepare necessary records and reports.
  • Use and maintain Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Perform routine safety checks and minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintain a safe working environment, including traffic control, ditches, and confined spaces.
  • Assist in cleaning and organizing the shop area.
  • Support Meters with reading, maintenance, service orders, and water service turn-ons/turn-offs for residential and commercial properties.
  • Assist Streets with roadway and signage maintenance.
  • Support Distribution, Collections, and Storm Operations with maintenance and inspection of sanitary sewer, manholes, lift stations, CCTV, water, sewer, storm lines, hydrants, valves, and PRVs.
  • Assist in Town event preparation, operation, and breakdown.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • One (1) year of laboring, heavy maintenance, equipment operations, or related experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record.
  • Colorado Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B required within one (1) year.
  • Flagger Certification required within one (1) year.
  • Confined Space Certification required within one (1) year.

Pay

Locates Maintenance Technician I

  • Hiring Range: $23.15/hr – $26.73/hr.
  • Full Range: $23.15/hr – $30.32/hr.

Schedule

  • Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM.
  • Must be available for on-call assignments outside normal working hours.
