Local Welder (South Louisiana and Surrounding Area)

This position provides yard maintenance support to Orion in the Southern Louisiana area (Lake Charles and Baton Rouge). The role involves welding, cutting, grinding, chipping, and clean-up for marine projects, working closely with the Welding Shop Foreman, Yard Superintendent, Dredge Captains, Deck Captains, Welders, Helpers, and other skilled crafts persons. The incumbent must uphold Orion’s guiding beliefs and core values centered on Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, with Integrity as the foundation.

Responsibilities

  • Work as assigned by the Welding Shop Foreman to ensure successful completion of marine yard support projects.
  • Gather information on the scope of work and obtain necessary permits before starting welding projects.
  • Cut, weld, chip, and grind metal as required by the project.
  • Use oxygen-acetylene cutting torches to cut metal from existing structures or platforms.
  • Weld sheet metal pieces after pile driving.
  • Perform stick rod welding in all positions to complete jobs.
  • Rig cables for lifting and moving objects.
  • Handle placement of steel plates and sheet piles using cranes, winches, cables, and hand tools.
  • Operate saws, presses, drills, and grinders to fabricate parts for equipment repair.
  • Inspect and make minor repairs to welding equipment; notify Foreman of needed parts.
  • Pick up materials and supplies to complete projects.
  • Collaborate with team members to complete projects safely and efficiently.
  • Participate in Safety and Environmental initiatives to ensure compliance with State/Federal regulations and improve Company programs.
  • Adhere to personal safety and the safety of co-workers; stop work if unsafe conditions are observed.
  • Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and Company policies.
  • Report violations of laws, regulations, or Company policies.
  • Perform related administrative and technical duties as assigned (e.g., certification training, safety training).
  • Maintain confidentiality of Company information.

Requirements

  • A minimum of two (2) years of welding experience or equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Good knowledge of welding trade practices and materials.
  • Understanding of the physical characteristics of metals used in marine construction.
  • Familiarity with the operation of marine equipment and devices.
  • Awareness of safe work practices in a marine environment.
  • Certified Structural Welder; must pass 3G&4G test with SMAW.
  • Proficiency in stick rod welding in all positions, acetylene and arc welding equipment, hand and power tools, and reading welding blueprints.
  • Effective verbal communication skills and ability to maintain simple records of time and materials.

Physical/Mental Requirements

  • Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, and personal flotation devices.
  • Qualified and physically able to drive passenger vehicles to work locations.
  • Capable of wearing welding face shields, personal flotation devices, and self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Ability to stand, stoop, kneel, squat, climb, or sit for long periods.
  • Perform repetitive movements involving feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands, and back.
  • Climb vertical ladders to heights of 40'-50'.
  • Work in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
  • Lift objects up to 50 lbs. alone.
  • Adapt to extreme temperature changes and outdoor conditions.
  • Work 9-12 hour days.
  • Remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately.
  • Evacuate work areas quickly in emergencies.
