Literature and Latin Teacher
Position Summary
We are looking for life-long learners passionate about shaping students' hearts and minds. Join Great Hearts Academies, a growing network of 49 public, open-enrollment, tuition-free classical schools in Phoenix (AZ), Baton Rouge (LA), Dallas/Ft. Worth (TX), and San Antonio (TX). Great Hearts currently provides over 30,000 K-12 students with access to a high quality, classical liberal arts education. We believe the highest goal of education is to become good, intellectually and morally.
Humanities at Great Hearts
Students read a selection of Great Books from the Western Tradition. A strong and deliberate focus on primary sources. Socratic approach and seminar style discussions in the classrooms. In Middle School Literature and Composition courses, you have the opportunity to engage students in an exploration of grammatical structures, literary devices, and the art of argument. In addition, you will guide students in discussing literature and poetry, which provide beautiful examples of language that conveys the heart of the human experience.
Classical Languages at Great Hearts
Latin is not an elective at Great Hearts, but part of the core curriculum. All Great Hearts students study Latin from 6th through 8th grade, and several continue in the classics track in high school, with advanced Latin and Ancient Greek (others study a modern language for four years of high school). Many academies offer Latin at K-5 as well. Latin provides an essential foundation for our academies’ focus on the Western tradition through its incorporation of history and culture. Rigorous and detailed Latin lessons will develop students that can translate texts from the original Latin to English through Socratic discussion.
