Lineworker Apprentice/First Class

Entry-level position in the line worker series, performing routine tasks and duties under supervision while learning the trade.

About the Role

This is the entry-level class in the line worker series, distinguished from the Lineworker First Class by the performance of more routine tasks. Employees may have limited work experience and will assist higher-level lineworkers in various duties.

Working Environment

• Duties performed both indoors (workshop setting) and outdoors, exposed to inclement weather conditions.
• May require working in confined spaces such as manholes.

Responsibilities

• Regular, punctual, and dependable attendance.
• Display honest, trustworthy, and ethical behavior with internal and external customers.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
• Assist with installation and maintenance of primary and secondary voltage power lines and systems.
• Assist in replacing old or malfunctioning power lines and constructing new power lines.
• Frame electrical poles prior to installation; climb poles to work on secondary distribution systems; check voltages; assemble and activate electrical components.
• Perform routine maintenance on electrical equipment, machinery, and tools.
• Ensure service vehicles are equipped to respond to emergency situations.
• Respond to service calls concerning power outages and electrical problems when accompanied by higher-level lineworkers.
• Observe all established safety standards, including wearing safety apparel and proper placement of work barricades and warning signs.
• Participate in tree trimming crew; assist in identifying obstructed lines and removing limbs and trees.
• Assist with cleaning vehicles, equipment, and City facilities associated with electric lines work.
• Assist with replacing service wires and connections; install meters and perform reconnections of service.
• Operate a wide variety of equipment, including hydraulic, hand, and power tools, trucks, wire pulling equipment, chippers, and voltage meters.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

About the Role (Lineworker First Class)

Advanced journey-level position responsible for skilled and specialized work in the construction, maintenance, and operation of electrical distribution, transmission, overhead, and underground systems. This role ensures the safety of subordinate line staff and requires full training in all procedures related to the assigned area of responsibility.

• Replace old or malfunctioning power lines; construct and string new power lines.
• Install conduit, conductors, and associated hardware for overhead electrical systems.
• Frame electrical poles; climb poles to work on distribution systems; install transformers and check voltages; assemble and activate electrical components.
• Perform routine maintenance on electrical equipment, machinery, and tools.
• Ensure service vehicles are equipped to respond to emergency situations.
• Respond to service calls concerning power outages and electrical problems on a stand-by basis.
• Observe all established safety standards, including wearing safety apparel and proper placement of work barricades and warning signs.
• Ensure proper equipment and materials are present at work sites.
• Replace service wires, connections, cross arms, bells, and insulators.
• Install meters, perform reconnections of service, inspect, test, and replace electric meters.
• Assist in collecting payments for electric service; disconnect delinquent accounts.
• Perform maintenance on the transmission system and in substations; assist in repair and maintenance of streetlights.
• Operate a variety of equipment, including hydraulic, hand, and power tools, trucks, bucket trucks, truck-mounted cranes, forklifts, wire pulling equipment, trenchers, voltage meters, transits, backhoe/front-end loader, skid steer, vacuum excavation, and hot line equipment.
• Perform building and site construction/maintenance tasks, including basic structural, electrical, drainage, concrete work, painting, mowing, and snow removal.
• Assist in testing and maintaining control equipment for remote operation of water and electrical distribution systems.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
