About the Role

Builds, repairs, and maintains electrical transmission and distribution overhead and underground systems. Work involves the use of precautionary methods and safety equipment due to electrical hazards present when working on or near energized conductors and electrical accessories. Opens and closes switches and installs grounding devices to lines and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Climbs poles or rides in bucket to install or repair wires, arms, insulators, or other hardware on poles.
  • Installs and repairs underground facilities such as cable, transformers, potheads, and pedestals.
  • Installs pole hardware and auxiliary equipment including transformers, lightning arresters, switches, fuses, and insulators using hand tools and mechanical devices.
  • Covers energized lines with rubber goods to facilitate safe handling of high-voltage lines without interrupting service.
  • Uses insulated poles (hot sticks) fitted with mechanically or hydraulically operated grasping and crimping tools and/or rubber gloves and sleeves to perform energized line work.
  • Services streetlight systems and patrols power lines.
  • Performs similar or less skilled work as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of apprentice lineman training, including B-200 certification written test with a score of 80% or higher and successful completion of hands-on comprehensive demonstrations.
  • External candidates must have a minimum of 4 years line work experience and successful completion of the journeyman pre-assessment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid CDL A state driver's license.
  • Must reside within a 35-mile radius (40 roadway miles) of the service location in Chickasha, OK.
  • Must have the ability to climb and work at heights.
  • Must pass the AEP Pre-Assessment Evaluation.
  • Must be able to communicate courteously and effectively with employees, customers, and the general public.
  • Must acquire qualifications necessary to perform the duties of the next higher line of progression within a timeframe determined by the company or vacate the current job classification.

Schedule

  • 40 hours per week with overtime and travel as required.
  • Must be available for overtime callout, including weekends and holidays.

Pay

  • Lineman Journeyman: $56.36 per hour
  • Lineman Apprentice 4th Year: $41.65 per hour
  • Lineman Apprentice 3rd Year: $39.40 per hour
  • Lineman Apprentice 2nd Year: $37.23 per hour

Physical Demands

Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10-20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements exceed those for Medium Work.
