About the role
Builds, repairs, and maintains electrical transmission and distribution overhead and underground systems, requiring use of precautionary work methods and safety equipment due to electrical hazards present when working on or near energized conductors and electrical accessories.
Responsibilities
- Opens and closes switches and installs grounding devices to lines and equipment.
- May climb poles and/or ride in bucket to install or repair wires, arms, insulators, or other hardware on poles.
- Installs and repairs underground facilities such as cable, transformers, potheads, and pedestals.
- Installs pole hardware and auxiliary equipment such as transformers, lightning arresters, switches, fuses, and insulators using hand tools and mechanical devices.
- May cover energized lines with rubber goods to facilitate safe handling of high-voltage lines without interrupting service.
- Uses insulated poles (hot sticks) fitted with mechanically or hydraulically operated grasping and crimping tools and/or rubber gloves and sleeves to perform energized line work.
- Performs similar or less skilled work as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of one year of distribution electrical power line work experience, OR one year of related line experience defined as:
- Successful completion of a one-year electrical power line school certificate plus a minimum of 16 weeks internship or distribution electrical power line experience, or
- An Associate degree from an electrical power line school which includes a minimum of 16 weeks internship or distribution electrical power line experience.
- Must possess and maintain a valid CDL A state driver's license.
- Must live within a 35-mile radius (40 roadway miles) of the service location.
- Must have the ability to climb and work at heights.
- Must pass the AEP Pre-Assessment Evaluation.
- Must acquire, within a timeframe determined by the Company, the qualifications necessary to perform the duties of the next higher line of progression or vacate the current job classification.

- Ability to communicate with employees, customers, and the general public in a courteous and proper manner.
Schedule
- 40 hours per week with overtime and travel as required.
- Must be available for overtime callout, including weekends and holidays.
- This role requires regular overtime and on-call response.
- Travel, including out-of-town travel, may also be required.
Pay
Compensation Range: $37.23 - $56.36 per hour.
Physical Demands
Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10-20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
