Lineboat Deckhand - On-call

Specific Responsibilities

  • Fully conversant with, and always work according to, the Company’s Safety Management System.
  • Reports unsafe situations immediately as well as opportunities for improvement to the Captain.
  • Aids the Captain in pre-sail safety checks and routine inspections of the vessel’s safety equipment.
  • Cooperates with other crew members, assists to perform their jobs efficiently and safely.
  • Runs lines to make vessel fast to the berth or turn loose for the vessel to set sail, either manually or under line boat power.
  • Delivers pallets or goods via launch service to vessels.
  • Aids in the transfer of cargo when necessary and as directed by the Captain.
  • Ensures safe, smooth operations by always being aware of surroundings, including paying attention to the safety of the ship’s crew as much as paying attention to the safety of yourself and others on your vessel.
  • Helps with maintenance tasks, equipment checks, or any other duties assigned by the Captain or his designate.
  • Communicates accurate, timely information in a professional manner with own crew, terminal employees, and visiting vessel crews.
  • Maintains and protects all property in excellent condition.
  • Acts as the lookout as required.
  • Demonstrates thorough familiarity with the vessel’s equipment.
  • Carries out vessel and equipment cleaning post job, as well as maintenance duties when assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Captain or his designate.

Required Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • A valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
  • A strong background in marine environment, with experience on commercial vessels preferred.
  • A demonstrated mechanical aptitude for operating vessel/machinery/equipment.
  • The ability to read, speak and understand English over radio, telephone and/or radio.
  • A valid Driver’s License and safe driving record are required and must be maintained during employment.
  • Adherence to the requirements of the Company’s Driver Safety Policy.
  • A demonstrated knowledge of using cargo information cards and material safety data sheets.
  • Basic computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • A demonstrated organizational, written, and verbal communication skills for effective teamwork.
  • A demonstrated good judgment for effective problem solving.
  • The ability and willingness to adapt to a variety of schedules and hours, including taking call outs and working weekends, holidays, and at nights.
