Light Duty Technician

About the role

As a Light & Medium Duty Technician, you will perform certified DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, light and follow-up repairs, light mechanical/hydraulic/electrical and electronic diagnostics, and other duties as assigned. You will handle scheduled dedicated work on assigned customer fleets (primarily light & medium-duty gas vehicles) and may also perform emergency roadside services when needed. This role requires creative problem-solving in emergency situations, self-management of your workday, and the ability to make effective decisions using critical thinking skills. You will provide excellent customer service, maintain attention to detail, and uphold situational awareness. While this role has dedicated hours, flexibility in scheduling and the ability to function effectively in emergencies are essential.

Responsibilities

• Perform minor adjustments and repairs on various types of truck equipment, including but not limited to:
  • Electrical/Brake/Cooling Systems
  • Starters/Alternators
  • Fan clutches
  • Engine electronics
  • Power steering systems
  • Engines (gas and diesel)
  • Transmissions (manual and automatic)
  • Clutches and Differentials
• Participate in regularly scheduled safety training and stay up to date on safety protocols to maintain a culture of safety and compliance.
• Document work performed, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders (RO) using a company-issued device and proprietary application.
• Communicate with management, team members, and Dispatch via Microsoft Office products, email, or phone to obtain approvals, retrieve purchase order numbers, or discuss findings.
• Perform all work in compliance with organizational safety, health, and environmental policies, as well as federal regulations (OSHA, EPA, and DOT).
• Obtain parts from approved local and national vendors as necessary for repairs.
• Accurately complete DOT forms and other documentation in a timely manner.
• Independently manage parts inventory and equipment on the company-issued service truck, including periodic reconciliation.
• Work with, understand, and evaluate technical information related to the job.
• Manage concurrent assigned tasks, prioritizing work-related activities and time allocations effectively.
• Work with a high degree of independence and manage your daily schedule.
• Assess customer needs, provide information or assistance, resolve problems, and meet expectations.
• Adhere to company policies, processes, and procedures.
• Diagnose, adjust, and repair various types of truck equipment (as listed above).
• Confer with customers, Dispatch, and/or the Sales team to discuss vehicle problems and work to be performed.
• Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions using test instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges.

Requirements

• High School Diploma/GED and 3 years’ experience in a related field (combination of light & heavy-duty preferred). Alternatively, a combination of education and experience, such as any level of degree/certification beyond a HS diploma/GED in a related discipline or 5 years’ experience in a related field.
• Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary to perform required job duties.
• Must successfully complete and pass a DOT-regulated pre-employment background screening and DOT physical prior to employment. A current and valid DOT medical card with more than four (4) months remaining may be submitted in lieu of a DOT physical. If the DOT medical card has four (4) months or less of validity remaining, a DOT physical will be required.
• Must be at least 21 years or older due to interstate operating authority commerce regulations.
• Safe driving record required; a 3-year MVR review will be conducted. Must hold a valid state-of-residence driver’s license and be able to obtain and maintain a Driver Qualification File.
