Lifeguard/Water Safety Instructor

About the Role

The Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) department of Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) provides fitness, recreation, lodging, and food and beverage programs for service members, their families, retired military, and civilian employees. This position supports the Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) Fitness, Sports, and Deployed Support Branch at Naval Station Everett.

Responsibilities

• Pool Lifeguard Duties:
  • Supervise patrons and monitor water activities to ensure safety.
  • Apply first aid, enforce safety rules, and perform water rescues as necessary.
  • Observe and address hazardous conditions (e.g., water/chemical imbalances, debris).
  • Perform rescue work, administer CPR or emergency first aid, and call for medical assistance.
  • Conduct and document pool chemical testing; adjust chemicals as directed.
• Water Safety Instructor Duties:
  • Instruct swimming lessons for all age groups (infant to adult) and skill levels, including strokes (front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, etc.).
  • Teach basic diving, safety, and survival skills.
  • Collaborate with lifeguards to ensure swim lesson safety.
  • Plan and organize instruction methods aligned with Aquatics Program Manager guidelines.
  • Provide feedback to parents/guardians on student progress.
  • Inspect and maintain swim instruction equipment to meet environmental health standards.
  • Submit records of completed lessons to the Aquatics Program Manager and American Red Cross.
  • Assist in developing special programs and activities.
• General Duties:
  • Administer aquatic assessment testing and certification per DoD, DON, and CNIC policy.
  • Provide equipment orientations and verify patron eligibility.
  • Serve as liaison between activity, security, and medical departments during emergencies.
  • Perform cleaning duties and routine facility maintenance (e.g., vacuuming, skimming, inspecting safety gear).
  • Maintain emergency equipment (e.g., backboards, suction devices, stretchers).
  • Enforce MWR policies for aquatic facilities and waterfront operations.
  • Prepare accident/incident reports and notify management of emergencies.
  • Handle hazardous materials (e.g., pool chemicals, cleaning agents).
  • Complete Daily Activity Reports, manage cash collections, and provide facility information to patrons.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and pass a background investigation.
• Irregular hours may be required (early shifts, late shifts, evenings, weekends, holidays).
• Ability to work with hazardous and biohazardous materials (e.g., pool chemicals, blood).
• Must lift and carry up to 50 lbs independently (over 50 lbs with assistance).

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years old.
• Valid lifeguarding certification from a recognized agency (or obtain within 30 days of hire).
• Ability to pass a 250-yard timed swim test.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Must maintain the following certifications:
  • Lifeguard Training Certification (CNICINST 1710.3).
  • CPR for Professional Rescuers and Healthcare Providers.
  • First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certification.
  • Blood Borne Pathogens Training.

Schedule

• 2 Regular Full-time positions: 35–40 hours per week (with benefits).
• 2 Flexible positions: 0–40 hours per week (non-benefited).

Salary is dependent on experience and/or education.
