About the role
This position supervises a shift of Public Safety Officers including their scheduling, payroll, assignments, training, annual and other types of evaluations, progress reports and behavior while on duty. This is a working supervisor position although some paperwork is required the majority of the work is physical in nature and functions in a similar capacity as a Public Safety Officer with respect to patrolling and responding to routine service and emergency responses.
Responsibilities
- Supervise Public Safety Officers
- Coordinate and daily operations of the Public Safety shift
- Develop, review and revise department policies, standard operating procedures and post orders
- Assist in facility committees or attend meetings in place of the manager
- Support operations of the department and hospital with alternate shifts
- Oversee and review all investigations conducted by the shift officers
- Document all rounds, write reports, and submit reports by the end of the shift
- Use RMS Public Safety incident computer based system and VH Risk Qual System
- Communicate information confidentially and use appropriate methods
- Inspect fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, and other safety equipment
- Perform fire watches, monitor camera systems, infant abduction systems, fire alarm systems, medical gas alarms, and generator alarms
- Investigate reports of loss and damage property and criminal activity
- Assist law enforcement with in-custody individuals as needed
- Analyze and coordinate responses to all alarms on the property
- Respond to emergency incidents and provide physical Public Safety to the command location
- Inspect buildings, doors, and ensure they are opened on time and secured after the regular business day
- Pick up cash deposits daily to be delivered to the cashier’s office
- Search patient rooms and patient property for contraband and take appropriate safety steps
- Respond to AirCare landing and takeoffs
- Provide detailed directions, escort staff members, and provide patient and staff safety
- Intervene in disputes and maintain order
- Intervene in situations involving aggressive individuals and prevent injuries to staff
- May be required to obtain instructor certification in aggression management, ASP baton, Handcuff, OC Foam Spray, and IAHSS Supervisory exam
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- College degree preferred, but will accept courses from an accredited school in law enforcement, safety, or related field
- Two years in a supervisory level preferably in Public Safety or law enforcement
- Previous experience in a related field with administrative / supervisory responsibility preferred
- Valid driver's license required
- American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation required
- International Association for Healthcare Public Safety and Safety Basic Exam within 1 year required
- ASP baton, Handcuff, OC Foam Spray and aggression management training within 90 days required
Qualifications
- Knowledge of Public Safety systems, procedures, enforcement codes preferred
- Competent to successfully interact with patients according to their special needs
- Good PR, and Written and Verbal Communication Skills Required
- Ability to use common sense and think quickly on feet required
- Good Problem-solving and Decision-making Skill Required
- Ability to interact with individuals with special needs, varying backgrounds, ethnicities, and under stress
- Team-building qualities required
- Ability to cover extra shifts to support department operations required
