About the role
The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) provides direct patient care for a diverse patient population working with faculty physicians, fellows, residents, medical students, nursing staff, patient services staff, and ancillary personnel. Administers medication and vaccinations. Reviews patient charts for patient compliance with orders and follows up. Assists in patient prescription refills. Participates in billing activities.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for preparing patients for the visit with the provider and delivering patient care.
- Recognizes symptomology of common medical illnesses and emergent medical conditions.
- Applies protocol for encountering infectious clients.
- Applies protocol for emergent medical conditions.
- Determines the chief complaint from the patient and records it accurately in the medical record.
- Prepares patients for exam with correct positioning and draping.
- Accurately takes and records vital signs in patient medical record.
- Assists with treatment and exams, including but not limited to gynecological exams.
- Administers prescribed procedures under provider direction including dressing changes, hot and cold applications, ear lavage, splints and slings, screening eye exams, hearing screening, specimen collection, and O2 saturation.
- Provide wound care, including dressing changes and monitoring for signs of infection.
- Provide basic emergency care and first aid within the scope of their training.
- Performs POC testing (including but not limited to Urine HCG, UA, etc.).
- As ordered, administers medications and vaccinations (IM, subcutaneous, oral, topical and other routes).
- Direct patient care in administering immunizations/vaccinations by utilizing nursing skills, standing orders, standardized procedures and protocols.
- Performs venipuncture adhering to all OSHA PPE safety requirements.
- Makes appropriate annotations in the patient chart, maintaining accurate and complete records of nursing care.
- Under direction of medical provider, makes appropriate annotation in patient management system using accurate billing codes.
- Serves as an authorized person to confirm administration of immunization / vaccination checks by qualified personnel.
- Evaluate patients' symptoms to determine the severity of their condition, often over the phone.
- Advise patients on the next steps, such as scheduling an appointment, or going to an emergency room.
- May participate in quality or metric projects.
- Performs duties required to maintain the facility, equipment, and supplies, including but not limited to: Cleans exam rooms, and equipment. Stocks rooms with supplies and equipment. Cleans and sterilizes equipment using aseptic technique.
Requirements
- Experience Requirement: Minimum of two years outpatient primary care clinic experience.
- License Requirement: Current California Vocational Nurse License; including qualifications for intravenous therapy and blood withdraw certifications.
- Certification Requirement: Current BLS Certification.
- Knowledge: Knowledge of Immunization schedules and immunization placement techniques. Knowledge of fundamentals of asepsis and sterile techniques, basic bacteriology an infection and disease control. Have the ability to prepare patients for examinations and minor surgeries. Demonstrated ability to administer medication and CPR certification. Ability to be an effective and cooperative member of a team. Ability to maintain confidentiality and sensitivity, to respect patient rights. Must comply with HIPAA regulations. Must show respect for patients with diverse cultural backgrounds and lifestyles. Ability to prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner. Ability to work quickly and accurately. Knowledge of medical terminology and coding. Knowledge of medical records procedures and have the ability to recognize abnormal laboratory values and report to the physician or nurse practitioner. Manual dexterity and visual and auditory acuity to perform the required clinical duties.
