Responsibilities

  • Maintains personal hygiene, provides comfort and safety, performs urgent housekeeping tasks, and takes measures to prevent pressure sores and other infirmities endemic to bedridden patients.
  • Monitors the operation of specialized equipment, regulates venous and dialysate pressure, and alerts the nurse-in-charge when readings and observations indicate an abnormal condition.
  • Performs specialized procedures such as peritoneal dialysis, adds prescribed medication to the dialysate solution, introduces and drains the solution according to precise procedures.
  • Provides emotional support to the patient, displays empathy and interest in the patient's progress, and encourages special aptitudes for the patient's rehabilitation.
  • Obtains and provides information on patients at change of shift briefings and in contacts with doctors.
  • Reports on significant incidents involving nursing personnel, patients, and others.
  • Leads a small group of nursing personnel in the medication, treatment, and nursing care of all patients in a medical, surgical, or rehabilitation ward, major section of a ward, or similar inpatient care unit.
  • Recognizes the need for emergency care; initiates life-saving actions in emergencies and alerts the nurse-in-charge or physician.
  • Sets up, operates, and monitors electronic and/or mechanical equipment such as croupettes, oxygen therapy, and suctioning equipment.
  • Makes sure the functioning of intravenous apparatus and cardio scopes is monitored.
  • Administers medications by injection, orally, and other predetermined methods, checks prescribed dosages against specified limits, observes and reports adverse reactions to medication.
  • Cleans, debrides, medicates, and applies dressings to wounds using sterile technique.
  • Prevents the spread of infection using principles of asepsis.
  • Schedules and assigns work to nursing employees, checks to ensure completion, charts and records of assigned tasks, and checks the quality in which tasks are performed.
  • Lays out appropriate instruments and supplies and assists the physician performing medical and surgical procedures.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of experience as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in a hospital inpatient care unit.
  • A license to practice as a Vocational Nurse issued by the Department of Consumer Affairs, California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (CPR and AED) Program certification.

Desirable Qualifications

Additional credit will be awarded to applicants whose experience exceeds the requirements.

Physical Class III - Moderate

This position requires standing or walking most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

Exam Content

This examination will consist of an evaluation of training and experience based upon the application information, desirable qualifications, and supplemental questionnaire, weighted 100%.

Eligibility and Vacancy Information
