Licensed Vocational Nurse (CLC) - EDRP Authorized

About the role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Performs and documents focused assessment and reports abnormal findings to the Charge Nurse - Nurse Manager and/or RN Team Leader
• Demonstrates a basic ability to appropriately carry out assigned patient care based on the patient's condition
• Administers oxygen therapy, medication administration (including IV medication if certified), completes clinical reminders with appropriate consults and alerts as indicated
• Accurately performs delegated procedures and treatments, assists with minor procedures, ensures medications/supplies are not expired and removed from inventory
• Assists in medication reconciliation and notifies the provider of changes, measures, records vital signs and enters them in CPRS, reports all significant deviations to the RN and/or healthcare provider immediately
• Adheres to standards of practice and safe technique in preparation and administration of medication, promotes preventive health measures such as vaccinations, screenings, and healthy lifestyle choices
• Demonstrates basic skill in identifying the individual's level of understanding and teaching the client and/or significant other about the basic concepts to his/her disease process, utilizes the standards of care and documents client's response
• Makes observations and documents care and the patient's response, promotes preventive health measures such as vaccinations, screenings, and healthy lifestyle choices

Requirements

• Basic Requirements: Graduate of an approved school of practical or vocational nursing at the time the program was completed by the applicant
• Licensure: Full - active - current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or District of Columbia
• Physical Standards: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019
• English Language Proficiency: Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in both spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d)
• Knowledge and Skill: Preparation, administration, and documentation of actions taken specific to commonly prescribed oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and/or intravenous medications
• Observation and Documentation: Patient's response to medication administered and the reporting of any noted change in patient's condition to RN or MD/DO
• Emergency Measures: Recognizes and appropriately responds to breakage/malfunction or loss of equipment, safety hazards, and supply deficiencies, promptly seeking the assistance of the RN or MD/DO and assisting in resuscitation procedures in cardiac and/or pulmonary arrest
• Education: Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent, completion of at least 24 months of approved school

Qualifications

• Basic Qualifications: Graduation from an approved school of practical or vocational nursing, one year of experience involving nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical, nursing, or patient care facility, providing a practical knowledge of human body structure and sterile techniques and procedures
• Preferred Qualifications: Evidence of Lean Belt training or experience, charge nurse/preceptor experience, professional governance participation, other role-related technical skills

Pay

Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA.
