About the role
Enables the physician to provide quality patient care and assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician.
Responsibilities
- Maintains patient flow during clinic hours.
- Documents review of systems; measures vital signs such as pulse rate, respirations, blood pressure, weight, and height; updates past and current medical, social, and family history; abstracts new procedures; reviews and updates medication lists at each visit.
- Correctly records patient information in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Participates with the registered nurse in determining nursing care needs based on collection and interpretation of data relevant to the health status of a client.
- Prepares patient charts in EMR for visits by scanning, abstracting, and reviewing diagnostic test results, hospital reports, and other medical records.
- Accesses and navigates websites or calls outside facilities to obtain necessary information.
- Refills medications per MD’s orders and pre-authorizes medications, including communicating with the patient, pharmacy, or insurance company as needed.
- Maintains pharmacy cabinet and records patient samples.
- Completes patient assistance paperwork/requests as needed.
- Performs basic triage per specific office protocol procedures.
- Returns calls and responds to MyChart as needed.
- Works in-baskets, daily workflow logs, and work queues in EMR/Practice Management system.
- Answers incoming calls, schedules appointments, checks patients in and out, and completes pre-certifications for prescriptions, procedures, and surgeries.
- Operates EKG, cardiac monitors, and other equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests, including phlebotomy, cast removal, and injections of controlled substances (licensed LPN/RN only).
- Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
- Adheres to legal responsibilities and requirements of the medical assistant role.
- Prepares and maintains clean, fully supplied exam rooms, ensuring proper infection control and daily cleaning.
- Orders and maintains inventory of medical and clinical supplies.
- Provides patient education and may manage phone triage of patient concerns.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of Practical Nursing.
- Current LPN license in the State of Ohio.
- 1-3 years of LPN experience required; physician office experience preferred.
- BLS certification required.
