Distinguishing Characteristics

Teaching & Research Center Licensed Practical Nurse: Provides direct nursing care under the direction of a Teaching & Research Center Nurse, physician, or other licensed health care provider. May supervise unlicensed direct care staff.

Teaching & Research Center Nurses: Registered professional nurses who perform a wide range of nursing functions consistent with Article 139 of the Education Law.

Illustrative Tasks

• Administers prescribed medications and nursing procedures to individuals.
• Obtains and records individuals’ vital signs using standard instruments and procedures.
• Observes, monitors, and records symptoms and conditions to obtain information for diagnosis and treatment.
• Treats patients as directed by registered nurses or physicians.
• Prepares individuals for or assists with examinations and treatments.
• Gathers urine, stool, and other specimens for laboratory analysis.
• Maintains charts and other records of individuals’ conditions and treatments.
• Attends to individuals’ personal hygiene and daily living tasks, including bathing, dressing, feeding, and grooming.
• Moves, positions, lifts, and transports individuals to deliver them to appropriate treatment areas and to make them comfortable.
• Talks with individuals, listens to concerns and responses, and encourages individuals to fully cooperate and participate in treatment and rehabilitation activities.
• Educates and counsels individuals regarding health, medications, procedures, and treatment goals.
• Performs housekeeping tasks, such as changing linens, and assists other staff in cleaning activities.
• Makes observations of and supervises the activities of unlicensed direct care staff, including Nursing Assistants, to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and requirements.

Qualifications

Teaching & Research Center Licensed Practical Nurse: Open Competitive: eligible for or possession of a license and current registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse in New York State.
