About the role
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) clinical associate position is located within Medicine Specialty Outpatient Clinics at VA St. Louis Health Care System (VASTLHCS) in St. Louis, Missouri. The incumbent is accountable for all patient care given and functions within the LPN scope of practice as it relates to the Medicine Specialty Outpatient Clinic policies.
Responsibilities
- Performs all duties within the scope of the LPN license, including medication administration.
- Works with RN and/or MD/DO to orient/train less experienced LPNs/LVNs and/or Nursing Assistants (NAs)/Health Technicians (HTs).
- Provides education to patients and/or family members regarding common disease processes, medications, and treatment regimes.
- Recognizes and responds to emergency situations, seeking assistance from RN or MD/DO and initiating appropriate interventions.
- Administers and documents prescribed medications, prepares and handles specialized instruments, and monitors patient conditions during complex procedures.
- Assists in developing and revising patient-driven holistic life care plans and collaborates with the patient care team.
- Assists with patient and family health education, focusing on self-management, prevention, and wellness.
Requirements
- Active, full, and unrestricted licensure as a Graduate Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
- One year of successful practice as an LPN/LVN or equivalent experience.
- Knowledge and ability to recognize and respond to urgent/emergent patient care situations, initiate appropriate actions, and communicate with RN or MD/DO.
- Ability to observe, identify, and respond to patient needs, considering emotional, socio-economic, and age-related factors.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to establish constructive relationships with patients, family members, and staff.
- Knowledge of human behavior and motivation to work effectively with patients and their families.
- Ability to organize and deliver care, recognizing and addressing emotional and socio-economic factors.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an approved school of practical or vocational nursing.
- One year of experience as an LPN/LVN or equivalent.
- Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent.
- Completion of at least 1 year of additional qualifying experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent.
Skills
- Proficiency in medication administration and documentation.

- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of human behavior and motivational principles.
