About the role

This position is located at the O’Neil Court Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Branch Office in Columbia, SC. The License Examiner III administers road test examinations and evaluates applicants’ ability to safely operate motor vehicles across all license classes.

Responsibilities

  • Administer road test examinations for Class A, B, C, D, E, F, and M vehicles.
  • Determine applicants’ physical and mental fitness and competency to safely operate motor vehicles.
  • Administer written, oral, and automated examinations on laws and driving procedures.
  • Perform pre-trip inspections on vehicles used during testing.
  • Examine, accept, prepare, enter, and print documents required for driver licenses, beginner permits, identification cards, vehicle registrations, license plates, permits, titles, and related transactions.
  • Process motor vehicle registration requests, including repossessed, abandoned, salvaged, homemade, and rebuilt vehicles.
  • Edit customer name and address fields; compute vehicle sales taxes and make weight adjustments to vehicle records.
  • Research suspension inquiries, modify driver records, International Registration Plan credentials, and issue automobile dealership licenses.
  • Answer customer inquiries in person and by phone regarding driver, vehicle, registration, titling, and insurance requirements.
  • Greet and direct customers to appropriate office areas; collect fees and donations for the Donate Life Fund.
  • Reconcile and prepare daily reports, refund requests, and process surrendered license plates.
  • Perform routine maintenance on office equipment; fax, mail documents, and run errands including trips to the post office and bank deposits.

Working Conditions

Road tests are conducted year-round in varying weather conditions (rain, wind, heat, cold). Testing occurs early morning through early evening. Tasks include outdoor exposure, prolonged sitting or standing, walking, and constant communication. Exposure to processing chemicals used in driver’s license development may occur.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid South Carolina driver’s license.
  • At least 21 years of age with one year of driving experience.
  • Completion of a nationwide criminal background check including fingerprinting.
  • For CDL knowledge test administration: completion of a formal CDL test examiner trainer course and examination covering the CDL Licensing System, test overview, and knowledge tests.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with internal and external customers.
  • Excellent customer service skills and thorough knowledge of driver licensing eligibility requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in driver licensing or public service roles.
  • Familiarity with DMV organizational competencies and automated licensing systems.
