Summary of Duties

Within the Judiciary's law library system, performs para-professional work of more than average complexity in one or more of the functional areas of librarianship.

Responsibilities

  • Perform various library support activities (e.g., circulation work, stack maintenance, processing orders for library materials, posting receipt of periodicals and other materials, locating and verifying bibliographic information using standard sources).
  • Apply library terminology, practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Organize library materials, including elements of bibliographic description, catalog card elements, and general format.
  • Use standard library tools and reference sources (e.g., Library of Congress Subject Headings, Books in Print, Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature).
  • Apply classification schemes (e.g., Dewey Decimal, Library of Congress).
  • Demonstrate understanding of the nature and organization of various types of publications and materials.
  • For some positions: supervise staff or demonstrate supervisory aptitude.

Requirements

Specialized Experience

Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in a library which demonstrated knowledge of library practices and required the application of library terminology, policies, and procedures.

Applicants must have one (1) year of experience comparable in scope and difficulty to the next lower level in the State service.

Supervisory Aptitude

Demonstration of aptitude or potential for supervisory duties through one or more of the following:

  • Successful completion of assignments involving some supervisory responsibilities or aspects.
  • Details to supervisory positions.
  • Completion of training courses in supervision with application of supervisory skills in work assignments.
  • Favorable appraisals indicating supervisory potential.

Substitutions Allowed

  • Education in a baccalaureate program at an accredited college or university may substitute for Specialized Experience at a rate of fifteen (15) semester credit hours for each six (6) months of experience, up to a maximum of one (1) year.
  • An Associate of Science or comparable degree in library science or technology from an accredited community college or junior college may substitute for two (2) years of Specialized Experience.
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university may substitute for two (2) years of Specialized Experience.
  • A master’s degree in library science from an accredited college or university may substitute for three (3) years of Specialized Experience.
