About the role
The Boise Public Library seeks two Library Pages to support daily library operations. These positions are long-term temporary, part-time roles that work 19 hours per week.
Responsibilities
- Sorts and shelves library materials using the Dewey Decimal Classification system.
- Maintains proper order of materials through frequent shelf reading and straightening.
- Shifts books and other materials to avoid overcrowding of shelves.
- Notifies appropriate staff of damaged items and any other cataloguing issues.
- Retrieves and processes returned library materials from the book drop.
- Checks materials for completeness and damage, returning them to circulation or forwarding them to the appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Sorts items for hold, transit or shelving.
- Provides information, directions or referrals to assist patrons.
- Guides patrons on access to the online catalog and self-checkout.
- Collects holds placed by patrons for pick-up or to be dispatched to other library locations.
- Refers patrons to appropriate staff for in-depth questions or reader’s advisory services.
- Performs proper library opening and closing procedures.
- Performs cleanup of library materials and public areas.
- Affords assistance with the maintenance of library displays and ensuring all book displays are filled.
- Affords assistance and participation in library programs and ensures safety precautions are maintained in the youth service areas.
- Reviews and analyzes library guidelines and procedures.
- Completes mandatory development training and attends staff meetings.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to pass City of Boise background check processes including a criminal history check and reference checks.
- Knowledge of basic computer functions and use of mouse and keyboard.
- Knowledge of library rules, policies, regulations and procedures.
- Knowledge of adult and children’s literature and library specific software (preferred).
- Customer service skills, including the ability to provide good customer service to people of all ages and backgrounds and shelving duties in a public library or similar setting (preferred).
- Ability to lift/carry up to 35 pounds, push/pull up to 35 pounds, and perform close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
- Close sensory ability to talk, hear and touch.
- Close hand/finger dexterity.
