Primary Responsibilities

  • Collect, identify, classify, receive, prepare, and catalog artifacts, objects, gifts, and other museum requests.
  • Provide and/or arrange for protective care and presentation of artifacts and objects at museum sites following established conservation standards.
  • Perform authentication and attribution of artifacts; make recommendations for the acquisition and negotiate the sale and loans of artifacts and objects; inspect private collections to advise on value of the Edward-Dean Museum collection.
  • Plan and design displays of museum collections and coordinate logistics for exhibitions including shipping, installation, and storage of artwork, artifacts, and event equipment.
  • Gather data and photographic records; perform research for preparation of exhibits and/or publication of technical articles and journals.
  • Aid in the preparation of press and publicity releases to publicize and promote public interest in the museum; promote museum programs through public speaking to professional, student, and community groups; serve as the museum liaison to schools; develop and conduct adult and children's educational interpretive programs at the museum.
  • Ensure a positive and engaging experience for visitors by overseeing ticketing processes, managing crowd flow, and coordination and/or conducting of tours, workshops, lectures, classes, audio guides, workshops and interactive exhibits.
  • Continuously seek ways to enhance visitor satisfaction and implement improvements based on visitor feedback.

Requirements

  • Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in museum studies, art, history, archaeology, or a closely related field.
  • Experience: One year of experience performing curatorial functions in an educational institution, museum, or other related institution preferred. A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in museum studies, art, history, archaeology, or a closely related field may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Knowledge of: Techniques of selection, evaluation, preservation, restoration, and exhibition of artifacts and objects; conservation practices, materials, and resources; professional publications and ethics.
  • Ability to: Independently research, develop, and prepare specialized collections and exhibits; perform original field and secondary research; prepare and deliver presentations to the public; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
