Library Media Technician-Secondary
Basic Function
Under the direction of a Library Media Teacher or assigned supervisor, perform technical library functions at a secondary school site, including organization, distribution, and storage of library books, textbooks and audio/visual materials; check books, textbooks, and materials in and out at the circulation desk; process and shelve library materials and textbooks; assist students and staff in the selection of library materials; implement the District's plan for the acquisition of library skills and library orientation.
Representative Duties
- Promote student use of the library for research purposes and reading pleasure.
- Oversee the textbook distribution function; receive, issue and control textbook inventory; research vendors and receive price quotes, coordinate textbook deliveries and resolve related issues.
- Aid staff in the selection and requisitioning of library and teacher materials; research and preview new materials; notify teachers of newly-arrived materials applicable to classroom topics or themes; compile lists of potential purchases; type requisitions for the purchase of books, magazines, textbooks and other materials.
- Assist students in researching print and software materials; assist students in locating and selecting materials using the conventional card catalog, computerized catalog system and subject bibliographies; instruct students in proper methods of utilizing the library and computerized reference sources; maintain computerized card catalog.
- Participate in circulation activities; check library materials in and out to students and staff; check and prepare materials for return to the circulating collection; shelve returned books, materials and audio-visual equipment; issue library and identification cards; reserve books for students and staff.
- Organize and prepare library displays, decorations and bulletin boards; maintain the library in a neat and orderly condition; monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior in the library.
- Input, process and receive library material and textbook orders; prepare materials for introduction into the library materials collection; prepare labels; affix identification and bar-code labels to materials; input related information into assigned computer database.
- Maintain record of overdue materials and send overdue notices to students and teachers; place holds on student grades for unpaid fines, dues and other monies owed; clear students of library fines, debts and delinquencies; collect books, materials and money and notify appropriate staff of clearance.
- Evaluate and maintain library materials and textbooks; pull and route materials in need of mending, binding or discarding; assess need for replacement or repair; perform minor repairs to damaged books and library materials; maintain records of lost or damaged books.
- Participate in inventory activities as directed; update catalog cards and electronic catalogs to assure accuracy; consult with teachers to provide input regarding obsolete materials.
- Maintain record of overdue materials and send overdue notices to students and teachers; place holds on student grades for unpaid fines, dues and other monies owed; clear students of library fines, debts and delinquencies; collect books, materials and money and notify appropriate staff of clearance.
- Monitor assigned budgets; post library funds to assigned accounts; reconcile and balance assigned accounts; prepare bank deposits; issue checks in accordance with established procedures.
- Perform general clerical work such as typing, duplicating, entering information into a computer and maintaining various files and records; compile, prepare and type correspondence, lists, reports, records and a variety of other materials.
- Operate and maintain a variety of office and instructional equipment, including a typewriter, VCR, copier, computer, fax machine and overhead projector.
- Communicate with a variety of internal and external contacts regarding library materials, equipment and supplies.
- Train and provide work direction and guidance to student assistants and volunteers.
- Participate in the coordination of book fairs and other special events in the library.
- Attend a variety of in-service trainings, workshops and meetings related to assigned activities.

Education And Experience
Passage of the PUSD examination for this classification or 48 college/university semester units or equivalent quarter units and three years experience in a library or media center environment. Self-certification of typing/keyboarding skills is required. Demonstrated proficiency will be expected during the probationary period for the class.
