About the role
The Part-time Library Assistant - Youth Services position at Fort Bend County is designed to assist the full-time staff at one of the library’s reference desks. This role involves answering reference questions, guiding patrons in using public computers, and participating in various library activities.
Responsibilities
- Provide answers to reference questions, referring complex or difficult questions to the full-time staff.
- Aid patrons in using public computers to access the public catalog, locate circulation accounts, and use the Internet and databases.
- Assist in other areas of the library as needed, such as programming for children, assisting at the circulation desk, or helping at other reference desks.
- Perform assigned shelf-reading duties (keeping the shelves organized).
- Complete book and AV processing or other tasks as directed.
- Attend reference training and other educational programs regularly.
- Stay updated on the library’s information resources through studying databases, online resources, and reference-book collections.
Requirements
- High school diploma and 48 credit hours of college, with relevant experience working with children in groups preferred.
- Typing and keyboarding skills.
- Computer skills involving internet and database searching.
- Good communication skills and ability to interact with staff and the public.
- Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and lift library materials up to 25 pounds.
Qualifications
- Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma and 48 credit hours of college.
- Relevant experience working with children in groups is preferred.
- Strong typing and computer skills are necessary.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.
- Physical abilities to perform tasks such as bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting up to 25 pounds are essential.

Benefits
Full-time employees are members of the Texas County District Retirement System (TCDRS) and enjoy a range of benefits. Part-time employees are paid $15.30 per hour, 24 hours per week.
