About the role
The Frances Willson Thompson Library is seeking customer service-oriented University of Michigan - Flint students to join our team in Fall 2025. You will help fellow students use library services and resources and serve as a source of campus information.
Responsibilities
- Assist in day-to-day operations at the circulation desk, including opening and closing the library.
- Process lending, return, and renewal of library items using library computer systems.
- Provide excellent customer service to University students, faculty, staff, and public patrons both in person and by phone.
- Maintain the stacks by shelving, shelf reading, shifting, and performing daily pickups of library items.
- Handle basic maintenance and technology troubleshooting of ITS computers and multi-function printers.
- Perform other assigned duties, including ad hoc projects in Technical Services and the Genesee Historical Collections Center.
- Participate in ongoing training exercises and regular performance evaluations.
Requirements
- Must be a currently enrolled student at UM-Flint in good standing.
- Must be able to work 8-12 hours per week, including some weekend and evening shifts.
- Must be able to lift, transport, sort, and shelve library materials.
- Must maintain patron confidentiality.
- Must communicate effectively with patrons.
Qualifications
- Previous library or customer service experience.
- Outgoing personality and customer service orientation.
- Knowledge of the UM-Flint campus.
- Ability to accurately follow instructions, pay attention to details, and work efficiently.
- Ability to work independently or with a team.
- Willingness to learn and actively participate in the workplace.
Preference will be given to students who can commit to at least one year and those with Work-Study eligibility.
Schedule
Approximately 8-12 hours per week, including evening shifts and occasional weekends. Work schedules are set at the beginning of each semester, accommodating class times.
Winter library operating hours:
- Monday - Thursday: 9am - 10pm
- Friday: 9am - 6pm
- Saturday: Closed
- Sunday: Closed
Pay
$15.00 per hour.
