About the role

The Library Assistant position at Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) involves supervising the physical library during evenings and weekends during the academic year. Additional duties include clerical tasks, circulation duties, data entry, assisting with digitization projects, and providing customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the MSOE Library during evenings and weekends.
  • Provide basic assistance to MSOE students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Supervise and support student workers.
  • Perform opening and closing procedures, including printing and posting room schedules.
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on library equipment.
  • Cover the Circulation Desk and perform circulation duties.
  • Perform customer service duties related to the Circulation function.
  • Check in and process print serials.
  • Manage collection management tasks, such as locating misplaced materials and conducting quality control.
  • Handle donations and weeding tasks.
  • Develop content for the library website.
  • Support the MSOE University Archives.
  • Manage the library email account.
  • Reserve study rooms using LibCal.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Experience in academic libraries, archives, or a completed/ongoing graduate library degree preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including flexibility, enthusiasm, confidentiality, attention to detail, teamwork, and openness.
  • Dependability and reliability.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Detail-oriented, prioritizing tasks, meeting deadlines, working quickly and accurately, following instructions, and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Effective problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
  • Basic reading and writing skills, including the ability to solve problems involving concrete variables.
  • Ability to use computers and library software for data entry and retrieval.
  • Professional, respectful, constructive, and positive communication skills.
  • Basic math skills and ability to understand and analyze data.
  • Physical requirements include sitting for most shifts, but standing, walking, reaching, lifting up to 50 pounds, and using hands and arms for repetitive motions.

Pay

$16/hour

Schedule

  • Academic Year (mid-August through mid-May): Onsite 20 hours per week, including evenings and weekends, shared with other Library staff. Ideal to cover 1-2 hours per week during weekday 1st shift hours for team collaboration and projects. Work shifts may be temporarily adjusted to meet library or MSOE operational needs. Flexibility for potential coverage is ideal.
  • Break Weeks (winter and spring breaks): 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday, within the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Exact schedule to be approved by the Director of the Library.
