Library Assistant

About the role
Anoka County Library Assistants help community members obtain library cards, learn about library offerings, manage accounts, use technology, and find information. You’ll be an essential part of the team, serving a diverse community of patrons at the Blaine location or future vacancies.
Responsibilities
- Create a welcoming environment by providing excellent customer service.
- Perform circulation duties: checkout, returns, assessing damages, running reports, and routing materials.
- Assist patrons with requests, technology, and basic research support.
- Connect patrons to physical and virtual library collections.
- Organize, maintain, and ensure collection tidiness.
- Process materials, link electronic records, and ensure efficient movement of materials across the county.
- Assess patron needs to locate materials and resources; refer to librarians as appropriate.
- Handle cash, including processing payments and reconciling the cash drawer.
- Provide reference, information, and material loan services.
- Place and track orders.
- Work closely with library employees to process and fulfill requests.
- Maintain stockroom supplies and ensure cleanliness and order.
- Communicate and apply policies and procedures to patrons.
- Troubleshoot computer software and hardware issues.
- Maintain current knowledge of county and library policies and procedures.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred: 1 year of customer service or library experience.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Physical Demands
- Standard office, warehouse, or public library environment with frequent distractions and multitasking.
- Vision abilities: close, distance, and ability to adjust focus (e.g., computer work).
- Hearing abilities: general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds.
- Varied physical activity: sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and occasional pushing of carts over 300 lbs.
- Occasional lifting of 20–50 lbs. while moving materials.
- Use of computers, phones, and standard office equipment.
- Occasional travel to other county work sites; may require driving a county or personal vehicle.
- May require contact with uncooperative, angry, or hostile clients.
- May use kick stools to reach items from high shelves.

Pay
Salary range: $20.19 to $26.25 per hour ($41,995.20 to $54,600.00 annually). Starting rate depends on experience, education, and qualifications.

Schedule
Part-time, non-exempt position with the following expected work hours:
- Week 1: Saturday 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Wednesday 9:30 AM – 6:00 PM, Thursday 10:30 AM – 2:30 PM.
- Week 2: Monday 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Wednesday 9:30 AM – 6:00 PM, Thursday 10:30 AM – 2:30 PM.

St. Francis Library, 3519 Bridge St NW, St. Francis, MN 55070.
Union Representation
This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement between Anoka County and Teamsters - 320.
