About the role
The Oliver Wendell Holmes Library (OWHL) at Phillips Academy Andover is seeking a dynamic individual to join its Library and Makerspace teams. The successful candidate will provide support at both the Welcome Desk and the Makerspace.
Responsibilities
- Staff the Welcome Desk and assist with circulation and reference questions.
- Support the Makerspace by helping students, faculty, and staff with creative projects and the use of Makerspace equipment and resources.
- Work part-time, splitting time between Library and Makerspace responsibilities, with a schedule that includes Sundays: 2:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m., Mondays: 5:30 p.m.–9:30 p.m., Wednesdays: 4:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m., and Fridays: 3:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m.
- Assist with circulation responsibilities, including checking materials in and out, answering patron questions, reshelving items, and helping users locate resources.
- Provide reference and research assistance in person, by phone, and via email.
- Support afternoon and evening library activities, including student clubs and campus group meetings and events.
- Participate in department meetings and professional development activities as available.
- Serve as a resource for students, faculty, and staff using Makerspace tools, equipment, and materials, providing one-on-one and small-group instruction in support of creative, co-curricular, and academic projects.
- Assist in maintaining the Makerspace by operating and troubleshooting equipment, monitoring supplies and inventory, supporting safety procedures, and completing basic administrative tasks.
- Supervise the Makerspace alongside Makerspace Practitioners on Sundays and Wednesdays, helping ensure a safe, welcoming, and productive environment for all users.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Intermediate technology skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud applications.
- Strong interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills (oral and written).
- Experience using Makerspace technologies such as 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, sewing machines, CNC routers, or similar equipment.
- Able and willing to work effectively in a team environment.
- Enthusiasm for learning and willingness to develop new skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least one year of general library experience.
- Experience with Evergreen ILS or similar library systems; familiarity with SpringShare products preferred.
- Knowledge of major academic databases.
- Experience working with teenagers and understanding their academic needs, interests, and developmental stages.
- Demonstrated ability to thrive in a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff through strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
