Position Summary

The Systems & Discovery Librarian is a 12-month, full-time, non-tenure-track, promotion-earning faculty position reporting to the Dean of the Library. This role supports library system optimization, resource discoverability, and instructional and research services. The position collaborates with librarians, faculty, and staff while also working independently to enhance user access to library resources, with a primary focus on the Natural Science Division.

Key Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design, planning, configuration, evaluation, and optimization of library systems (e.g., ILLiad, Alma, Primo, Uborrow, Papercut).

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for system and hardware-related issues (including laptops and printers).

  • Work to enhance functionality and ensure effective use of library technology.

  • Activate and test access to electronic resources within the library services platform.

  • Ensure authentication, availability, and troubleshooting across platforms such as Alma, Primo, EZproxy, OCLC WorldCat, and ILLiad.

  • Maintain accurate holdings data and optimize discovery tools.

  • Collaborate with fiscal personnel and vendors on licensing, acquisitions, and renewals.

  • Analyze usage data to support collection development and budgeting.

  • Partner with faculty to meet academic and research needs.

  • Coordinate with FLVC and the Director of Tech Services to maintain access to resources.

  • Provide individual and group research assistance through appointments, walk-ins, email, and digital platforms.

  • Develop instructional materials and provide classroom-based instruction upon faculty request.

  • Maintain LibGuides and A–Z database listings to support independent research.

  • Collaborate with instructional technology teams to support student learning.

  • Assist faculty in selecting and using appropriate research and technology tools.

  • Support students in utilizing instructional technologies available within the library.

  • Facilitate workshops on the effective use of information resources and instructional technology.

  • Serve as a key link between the library and faculty to identify instructional and technology needs.

  • Initiate and support programs and events that raise awareness of library services.

  • Contribute to the library’s mission and visibility.

  • Support long-term planning, policy development, service assessment, and program improvement.

  • Participate in collection development and library administration.

  • Stay informed about current trends and innovations in library technologies.

  • Learn new skills to support faculty and student needs.

  • Contribute to the profession and engage in community service, including committee participation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in Library & Information Sciences from an ALA-accredited institution.

  • Experience providing reference or instructional services in an academic library.

  • Experience developing LibGuides, tutorials, or learning objects.

  • Familiarity with Canvas or another Learning Management System.
