Engineering and Computer Science Librarian

About the role

The Engineering and Computer Science Librarian is a critical member of the Syracuse University Libraries’ Subject Instruction Team, situated within the Department of Research and Scholarship. They ensure that the Libraries collections and instructional services support the academic and research needs of students, staff, and faculty in the College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) related academic programs and research centers.

Responsibilities

• Liaison Reference, Instruction, and Collection Development
• Provide in-depth subject reference and consultation services in assigned disciplines through in person consultation and digital modes of communication.
• Develop and provide specialized online and in-person information literacy instruction for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff in assigned disciplines in conjunction with the Libraries’ Information Literacy Program.
• Create and maintain subject-related information and instructional materials.
• Participate in the marketing, development, implementation, assessment, and provision of outreach programs for Libraries services.
• Select materials in coordination with Collection Development and Analysis Librarians and perform other relevant discipline-specific collections activities as needed.
• Create, deliver, and evaluate instructional and consultative services related to artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and emerging technologies that advance research, teaching, and learning.
• Create instructional materials, teach workshops, and consult faculty/staff/students on AI practices on topics such as prompt engineering, machine learning libraries, computational linguistics, and research methods.
• Serve as liaison librarian to the College of Engineering and Computer Science.
• Serve as a member of the subject instruction team and in conjunction with the Libraries' Information Literacy Program, develop and provide University information literacy instruction.
• Contribute to team programming through the coordination and delivery of research roundtable workshops and other instructional initiatives that advance research skills and information literacy across the University.
• Develop, coordinate, and deliver workshops and programs that support research skills for students at all levels, both within engineering and computer science and across disciplines.
• Partner with the Graduate School and other University units to deliver outreach and plan and deliver research-related instruction, workshops, and programming, including dissertation bootcamp and graduate student orientation.
• Support faculty and students through curriculum-based instruction, workshops, and programming, and foster collaborative relationships with faculty to support instruction in research methods, identifying and assessing relevant source material, citation management, and other information literacy skills.
• Assess instructional services to ensure they meet the evolving expectations of faculty, students, staff, and the University community.

Requirements

• Education and Experience Required:
• MLS (ALA-accredited) or equivalent combination of education and experience
• 1+ year of experience working in an academic library
• Reference and instruction experience, preferably in an academic library environment
• Demonstrated interest in engineering, computer science, or other STEM-related disciplines
• Demonstrated commitment to supporting and contributing to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment

• Desired Qualification:
• Undergraduate degree in engineering, computer science, or a related discipline
• 1+ year of experience serving patrons in STEM disciplines
• Demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching and instruction, with an interest in developing research skills and/or information literacy instruction and engaging learning experiences
• Experience planning and delivering instruction, workshops, programs, or lesson plans in an academic, library, or educational setting
• Experience supervising student workers
• Working knowledge of AI research services related to artificial intelligence for research, teaching, and learning

• Significant understanding of trends in engineering and computer science information, research, and teaching
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills with the ability to establish positive and productive collaborations with faculty, researchers, students, staff, and librarians
• Significant understanding of instructional pedagogy and practices
• Interest in participating in regional, national, and international collaborations related to engineering and computer science librarianship and library instruction
• Demonstrated ability to initiate, plan, and complete projects
• Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to establish positive and productive collaborations with faculty, researchers, students, and librarians

Pay
