Legal Assistant - Workers Compensation
Job Details
- e are seeking an experienced Workers’ Compensation Legal Assistant to support attorneys handling employer and insurer-side workers’ compensation matters from initial intake through hearing and appeal.
About the Role
Average of 2+ years of legal assistant or legal secretary experience, prior workers’ compensation defense experience required, knowledge of Michigan workers’ compensation procedures, terminology, forms, and filing requirements, experience supporting attorneys with litigation, hearings, discovery, and case management, strong proficiency with Microsoft Office and legal case management systems, excellent written communication, proofreading, organization, and deadline-management skills, ability to manage a busy caseload while maintaining accuracy and confidentiality, high school diploma required; associate degree or paralegal certificate preferred.
Responsibilities
- Draft, format, proofread, and file pleadings, correspondence, discovery, motions, and hearing documents
- Manage attorney calendars, deadlines, hearings, depositions, independent medical examinations, and client meetings
- Maintain organized electronic and physical case files
- Request and organize medical records, employment records, claim documents, and other case materials
- Cook up with clients, insurance carriers, opposing counsel, medical providers, and the Workers’ Disability Compensation Agency
- Prepare hearing exhibits, deposition materials, case summaries, and attorney binders
- Monitor case deadlines and ensure timely filing of all required documents
- Assist attorneys with billing, time entry, expense reporting, and general administrative support
- Provide professional communication and updates to clients regarding case-related matters
Requirements
- High school diploma required; associate degree or paralegal certificate preferred
Qualifications
- 2 or more years of legal assistant or legal secretary experience
- Prior workers’ compensation defense experience required
- Knowledge of Michigan workers’ compensation procedures, terminology, forms, and filing requirements
- Experience supporting attorneys with litigation, hearings, discovery, and case management
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office and legal case management systems
- Excellent written communication, proofreading, organization, and deadline-management skills
- Ability to manage a busy caseload while maintaining accuracy and confidentiality
