About the role
The Legal Assistant supports the Managing Director of the Law Clinic by handling clerical duties, assisting with legal document preparation, maintaining client files, and instructing students on clinic-specific applications.
Responsibilities
- Assists the Managing Director and faculty in all clerical matters relating to Clinical & Experiential Programs.
- Assists faculty and students in at least three clinics to prepare legal documents and maintain client files, including opening files, closing files, archiving, and legal mail.
- Instructs incoming students in the appropriate use of the case management software, e-mail, the remote access system, and other clinic-specific applications.
- Acts as liaison and possible interpreter/translator among faculty members, clients, their families, witnesses, opposing attorneys, and students who represent live matters and assists in arranging interpretation and translations for client meetings, court appearances, or hearings.
- Aids faculty with coursework, articles, and publications.
- Uses Westlaw, LexisNexis, and the internet for legal research.
- Collaborates with students to coordinate information regarding clinic classes and cases.
- Manages travel itineraries, handles reimbursements on miscellaneous financial expenses, performs general secretarial work – including scheduling meetings/appointments, requesting room reservations, proofreading, editing documents, maintaining organized files, etc.

Management Responsibilities
May provide peer-level coordination or subject-matter guidance to colleagues performing similar work and/or student, part-time workers, including helping organize tasks, clarify priorities, or review work for quality or consistency.
Additional Functions
- Assists in special events and in the production of clinic brochures, flyers, and information sheets.
- Disseminates information to students who inquire about various clinical offerings.
- Processes invoices, check requests, and other administrative tasks as needed.
- Troubleshoots clinic computers and software.
- Coordinates and administers extensive clinical databases, and/or is the point person with the case management technical support, the Law School portal, the Law School’s ISP Department, and consultants.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Minimum 2 years of previous relevant experience.
- Excellent computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Westlaw.
- Ability to uphold a strict level of confidentiality, meet deadlines, be organized, and manage projects and assignments with little supervision.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- 2 years of legal experience.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Fluency in Spanish.
