About the role
The Legal Assistant will provide comprehensive support for bankruptcy matters, including preparing and filing legal documents, monitoring active cases, managing deadlines, coordinating with clients and external parties, and assisting attorneys with day-to-day case operations.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, process, and file bankruptcy-related documents
- Aid with bankruptcy filings and electronic court submissions through federal bankruptcy court systems
- Gather and organize information from creditors, debtors, trustees, and court personnel
- Prepare, review, and file proofs of claim
- Maintain case files and monitor matters through electronic case management platforms
- Calendar and track bankruptcy deadlines, hearings, claims bar dates, response deadlines, and filing requirements
- Review documents for accuracy, formatting, completeness, and compliance with court requirements
- Prepare correspondence, reports, legal documents, and other materials as needed
- Assist attorneys with preparation of exhibits, hearing materials, and meeting documents
- Communicate with clients, courts, vendors, and other parties regarding case-related matters
- Manage attorney calendars, meetings, conferences, and travel arrangements
- Cook up with internal departments regarding administrative and billing-related matters
- Support general legal administrative functions and maintain organized case workflows
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience working directly in bankruptcy law as a legal assistant or similar legal support role
- Experience with Chapter 7, Chapter 11, Subchapter V, and/or Chapter 13 matters preferred
- Knowledge of federal bankruptcy procedures, court rules, and legal terminology
- Experience with electronic filing systems, including PACER and CM/ECF
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and legal document management systems
- Familiarity with legal research or litigation technology platforms is a plus
- Excellent proofreading, writing, and document production skills
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize deadlines and manage multiple matters
- Professional communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with attorneys, clients, and outside parties
