Lecturers- Philosophy
The Department of Philosophy in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for two Lecturer positions. We are one of the oldest departments on campus, over 130 years old, with faculty specializing in a broad range of areas including moral, legal, and social philosophy; philosophy of science; philosophy of physics; philosophy of humor; philosophy of race; philosophy of computation, technology, and artificial intelligence; metaphysics; epistemology; social and political philosophy; rational choice theory; theories of justice, community, and fraternity; philosophy of mind and cognition; philosophy of economics; and moral psychology.
About the Role
These are full-time, 9-month, non-tenure track appointments. Renewal is contingent on funding, performance reviews, and sufficient course enrollments. The target start date is August 16, 2026. Lecturers teach three courses per semester, including introductory and advanced courses, and are expected to work on campus full-time.
Responsibilities
Position 1:
- Prepare and present instructional content for courses in Formal Epistemology, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Mind/Cognitive Science, or Philosophy of Mathematics.
- Ability to teach Philosophical Foundations of Computer Science and/or Advanced Logic is an asset.
Position 2:
- Prepare and present instructional content for courses in Ethics, Social/Political Philosophy, or History of Philosophy.
Both Positions:
- Monitor and mentor teaching assistants.
- Hold office hours to meet with students outside of class time.
- Write and grade examinations, and assign grades.
Qualifications
- PhD in Philosophy, or related areas, by the time of the appointment.
- Record of teaching effectiveness at the undergraduate level.
- Research experience/training in the focus area of the position.
Pay
The budgeted salary for this position is $60,000.
