Lecturer Pool in Department of Native American Studies (Academic Year 26/27)

Cal Poly Humboldt’s Department of Native American Studies is a continuation of Indigenous knowledge from time immemorial, presenting Native American experience from a distinctly tribal perspective. As the first CSU campus to offer a baccalaureate degree in Native American Studies—and still the only program of its kind in the CSU—NAS operates as a stand-alone department with active tribal input. The program serves both Native American students and non-Native students passionate about social justice, sustainable living, and natural-resource management.

About the role

Temporary lecturers are hired on an as-needed basis to teach courses in the department’s curriculum. Appointments are typically made at the beginning of the salary range and are prorated to the number of units worked, paid in six monthly payments per full semester.

Qualifications

• Unless otherwise noted, an M.A., M.S., or M.J. in an appropriate field plus extensive experience in the course area.
• Successful teaching experience in Native American Studies or Native American issues.
• Evidence of cultural knowledge of and experience with American Indian people and tribes.
• For NAS 480 – Special Topics: successful teaching in the area of instruction and evidence of cultural knowledge.
• For Tribal Sovereignty, Tribal Citizenship, Tribal Governance & Leadership, Federal Indian Law, Tribal Water Rights, and Tribal Justice Systems: an earned Ph.D., J.D., M.J., or M.A. with specialization in Federal Indian Law; experience and expertise in Federal Indian Law and Tribal Water Law through a breadth of knowledge with Native American curricula and/or extensive experience working with or for Indian tribes.
• Preference is given to candidates with experience teaching in higher education, especially in Native American Studies.

Pay

• Lecturer A: $5,507 – $6,677 per month
• Lecturer B: $6,221 – $13,224 per month
• Lecturer C: $6,825 – $14,523 per month

Full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salaries are prorated to the number of units worked and paid in six monthly payments per full semester.

About Cal Poly Humboldt

Cal Poly Humboldt sits on the traditional homelands of the Wiyot people in Arcata, CA (Goudi’ni, “over in the woods”). The campus is in close proximity to several thriving Native American tribes and communities. Humboldt has the largest percentage of Native American students in the CSU system and over 30 Native American faculty and staff, many from local California Indian tribes. The university is home to leading Native American programs such as the Indian Tribal Education and Personnel Program (ITEPP) and the Indian Natural Resource, Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP). The campus offers extensive resources for research, teaching, and community work on Native American history and cultures, including the Humboldt Room in the Library, which houses tribally focused archive materials. Humboldt engages with Native communities through initiatives like the annual California Indian Big Time, Indigenous People’s Week, and the Council of American Indian Faculty and Staff.
