Lecturer - PHYS 203: Modern Physics - Lab (Fall 2026)

California State University San Marcos is seeking a part-time lecturer for Fall 2026 to teach PHYS 203: Modern Physics in the Department of Physics, College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

About the Course

An overview of the fundamental ideas of modern physics and coverage of the principles of fluids and thermodynamics. Topics include:

• Fluids
• Temperature and heat
• The kinetic theory of gases
• Entropy and the laws of thermodynamics
• Theory of special relativity
• Wave-particle duality
• Introduction to quantum mechanics and atomic physics
• Electronic properties of solids
• Nuclear physics
• Descriptive introduction to the standard model and cosmology

Schedule: Fridays, 12:30 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. (in-person).

Requirements

• A master’s degree or equivalent professional experience in Physics and related fields
• Per the California State University’s Out-of-State Employment Policy, working in the State of California is a condition of employment

Preferred Qualifications

• A doctorate or equivalent in Physics and related fields
• Experience teaching similar courses in 4-year universities
• Demonstrated intercultural competence and a commitment to serving our campus community in teaching and service

Pay

Salary is commensurate with education and experience, based on the following ranges:

• Lecturer A (Academic Year): $5,507 – $6,677 per full-time month (anticipated hiring range: $5,507 – $6,008)
• Lecturer B (Academic Year): $6,221 – $13,224 per full-time month (anticipated hiring range: $6,221 – $7,045)

The anticipated hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range.
