Lecturer or Senior Lecturer - Applied Mathematics

About the role
The School of Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW is a leading research and teaching institution, ranked in the top 100 worldwide in mathematics and statistics. The School has over ninety continuing academic staff and several dozen research staff, with research strengths in Applied Mathematics, including Biomathematics, Computational Mathematics, Dynamical Systems and Integrability, Fluid Dynamics, Mathematical Modelling, Mathematical Physics, Optimisation, Stochastic Modelling, and Fractional Calculus. Research groups are interconnected, fostering collaboration within and beyond the School.
The purpose of this role is to conduct independent research and deliver excellent teaching in the School of Mathematics and Statistics. There are 3 roles available at either Lecturer (Level B) or Senior Lecturer (Level C).
Pay
- Level B: $133,000 – $156,000 plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading
- Level C: $161,000 – $185,000 plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading
Continuing, full-time (35 hours per week).
Responsibilities
Level B:
- Carry out high-quality, high-impact research aligned with the School’s strengths, aiming for publication in influential journals.
- Work collaboratively and independently on research grant proposals for national competitive agencies and other funding bodies.
- Develop research collaborations within the School, University, and broader national and international communities, including industrial partnerships.
- Disseminate research findings at seminars and conferences locally, nationally, and internationally.
- Supervise undergraduate (honours) and postgraduate coursework capstone projects, as well as PhD and Masters research students.
- Contribute to program and course design, and deliver high-quality teaching using appropriate pedagogical methodologies and technologies across undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including Honours and Masters courses.
- Actively participate in School activities, take on leadership roles, and undertake administrative duties as specified by the Head of School.
- Engage with industry and the community to develop productive relationships, attract funding, and participate in professional activities.
- Collaborate with peers across the Faculty and UNSW, and contribute to mentoring other staff.
- Align with and demonstrate the UNSW Code of Conduct and Values.
- Comply with all health and safety policies and procedures.
Level C (in addition to the above):
- Play a significant role in research projects, including leadership of a research team.
- Obtain research income from nationally competitive grants and research end-users as a member or leader.
- Apply critically reflective teaching practices and provide assessment and feedback at course and program levels.
- Attract peer recognition and establish research networks at the international level.
Requirements
Level B:
- A PhD or equivalent qualification in relevant mathematical sciences.
- Demonstrated research ability in an area of applied mathematics aligned with the School’s research directions.
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence.
- Capacity to conduct productive research at an international level, with a strong publication record in top, peer-reviewed journals.
- Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality external grant applications.
- Ability to supervise PhD students and willingness to undertake compliance and supervisor training.
- Experience in student supervision, including Honours, Masters, and vacation scholar projects.
- High-level oral and written communication skills, with the ability to network effectively and interact with diverse students and staff.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to deliver high-quality and innovative teaching and student experiences.
- A track record of significant involvement with the profession and/or industry.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines, and build effective relationships.
- Commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives, and values, along with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant training.
Level C (in addition to the above):
- A substantial record of publications in top, peer-reviewed journals.
- Strong track record of successful postgraduate supervision.
- Strong dedication to independent research and research leadership.
- Demonstrated record of competitive external research funding.
- Experience in teaching and learning using a range of pedagogical approaches and educational technologies, including course and program development at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels.
- Excellent leadership skills in community and professional engagement.
