Lecturer or Senior Lecturer - Applied Mathematics

The School of Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW is a leading research and teaching institution, ranked in the top 100 worldwide in mathematics and statistics. The School has over ninety continuing academic staff and embodies a broad range of research interests in applied and pure mathematics and statistics, with particular strengths in:

The purpose of this role is to conduct independent research and deliver excellent teaching in the School of Mathematics and Statistics. There are 3 roles available.

Responsibilities

Level B (Lecturer):

• Actively carry out high-quality and high-impact research in areas aligning with the School’s research strengths, aiming for publication in influential and high-impact scholarly journals.
• Work collaboratively and independently on research grant proposals and applications to national competitive grant agencies and other funding bodies.
• Develop research collaborations within the School, the University, and nationally/internationally, including industrial partnerships.
• Disseminate research findings at seminars and conferences within UNSW and externally.
• Supervise undergraduate (honours) and postgraduate coursework capstone projects, as well as PhD and Masters research students.
• Contribute to the design of programs and courses, and deliver high-quality teaching using appropriate pedagogical methodologies and technologies across all levels, including Honours and Masters.
• Actively participate in School activities and take on leadership roles as required.
• Undertake administrative duties as specified by the Head of School and participate in School, Faculty, and/or University committees.
• Engage with industry and the community to develop productive relationships, attract funding, and participate in professional activities.
• Collaborate with peers across the Faculty and UNSW, contributing to the mentoring of other staff.
• Align with and demonstrate the UNSW Code of Conduct and Values.
• Comply with all health and safety policies and procedures, ensuring actions do not impact the health and safety of yourself or others.

Level C (Senior Lecturer): In addition to the above, the role includes:

• Playing a significant role in research projects, including leadership of a research team where appropriate.
• Obtaining research income from nationally competitive grants and research end-users as a member or leader.
• Applying critically reflective teaching practices and providing assessment and feedback at both course and program levels.
• Attracting peer recognition and establishing research networks at the international level.

Requirements

Level B (Lecturer):

• A PhD or equivalent qualification in relevant mathematical sciences.
• Demonstrated research ability in an area of applied mathematics aligning with the School’s research directions.
• Evidence of teaching effectiveness and a passion for educational excellence.
• Evidence of research collaborations and the capacity to conduct productive research at an international level.
• A strong publication record in top, peer-reviewed journals.
• Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality external grant applications.
• Ability to supervise PhD students and willingness to undertake compliance and supervisor training.
• Experience in student supervision, including Honours, Masters, and vacation scholar projects.
• High-level oral and written communication skills, with the ability to network effectively and interact with diverse students and staff.
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to deliver high-quality and innovative teaching and student experiences to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
• A track record of significant involvement with the profession and/or industry.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines, and build effective relationships.
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives, and values.
• Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and a commitment to attending relevant training.

Level C (Senior Lecturer): In addition to the above, the role requires:

• A substantial record of publications in top, peer-reviewed journals.
• A strong track record of successful postgraduate supervision.
• Strong dedication to independent research and research leadership.
• Demonstrated record of competitive external research funding.
• Experience in teaching and learning using a range of pedagogical approaches and educational technologies, including course and program development and delivery at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels.
• Excellent leadership skills in community and professional engagement.

Pay

• Level B: $133,000 – $156,000 per annum
• Level C: $161,000 – $185,000 per annum

Plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading.

Schedule

Continuing, full-time (35 hours per week).
