Lecturer or Senior Lecturer - Applied Mathematics

This role is based in Sydney, Australia.

About the role

The School of Mathematics and Statistics currently has more than ninety continuing academic staff and several dozen research staff, as well as visiting academics. UNSW is the only university in Australia ranked in the top 100 in the world in mathematics and statistics by CWTS Leiden, US News, and QS. The School embodies a broad range of research interests in applied and pure mathematics and statistics, with particular strengths in:

• Biomathematics
• Computational Mathematics
• Dynamical Systems and Integrability
• Fluid Dynamics and Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences
• Mathematical Modelling
• Mathematical Physics
• Optimisation
• Stochastic Modelling and Fractional Calculus

The purpose of this role is to conduct independent research and deliver excellent teaching in the School of Mathematics and Statistics. There are 3 roles available.

Pay

• Level B: $133,000 – $156,000 plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading
• Level C: $161,000 – $185,000 plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading

Schedule

Continuing, full time (35 hours per week).

Responsibilities

Level B:

• Actively carry out high-quality and high-impact research in areas aligning with the School’s strengths, aiming for publication in influential and high-impact scholarly journals.
• Work collaboratively and independently on research grant proposals and applications to national competitive grant agencies and other funding bodies.
• Develop research collaborations within the School, the University, and broader national and international networks, including industrial collaborations.
• Disseminate research findings at seminars and conferences within the School, UNSW, nationally, and internationally.
• Supervise undergraduate (honours) and postgraduate coursework capstone projects, as well as PhD and Masters research students.
• Contribute to the design of programs and courses, and deliver high-quality teaching using appropriate pedagogical methodologies and technologies for both mathematics and non-mathematics students at all levels, including Honours and Masters.
• Actively participate in School activities and take on leadership roles as required.
• Undertake administrative duties as specified by the Head of School and participate in School, Faculty, and/or University committees.
• Engage with industry and the community to develop productive relationships, attract funding, and participate in professional activities.
• Collaborate with peers across the Faculty and UNSW, contributing to the mentoring of other staff.
• Align with and demonstrate the UNSW Code of Conduct and Values.
• Comply with all health and safety policies and procedures, ensuring actions do not impact the health and safety of yourself or others.

Level C (in addition to the above):

• Play a significant role in research projects, including leadership of a research team where appropriate.
• Obtain research income from nationally competitive research grants and/or research end-users as a member or leader, at a level relevant to leading universities.
• Apply critically reflective teaching practices and provide assessment and feedback at both course and program levels.
• Attract peer recognition and establish research networks at the international level.

Requirements

Level B:

• A PhD or equivalent qualification in relevant mathematical sciences.
• Demonstrated research ability in an area of applied mathematics aligning with the School’s research directions.
• Evidence of teaching effectiveness and a passion for educational excellence.
• Evidence of research collaborations and the capacity to conduct productive research at an international level.
• A strong publication record in top, peer-reviewed journals.
• Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality external grant applications.
• Ability to supervise PhD students and willingness to undertake compliance and supervisor training.
• Experience in student supervision, including Honours, Masters, and vacation scholar projects.
• High-level oral and written communication skills, with the ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to deliver high-quality and innovative teaching and student experiences to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
• A track record of significant involvement with the profession and/or industry.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines, and build effective relationships.
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives, and values.
• Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and a commitment to attending relevant training.

Level C (in addition to the above):

• A substantial record of publications in top, peer-reviewed journals.
• A strong track record of successful postgraduate supervision.
• A strong dedication to independent research and research leadership.
• Demonstrated record of competitive external research funding.
• Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning using a range of pedagogical approaches and educational technologies, including course and program development and delivery at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels.
• Excellent leadership skills in community and professional engagement.
