Lecturer of Spanish – Specialist in Translation and Interpreting, Modern Languages and Literatures Department

About the role

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at John Jay College-CUNY seeks a full-time Lecturer in Spanish-English Translation & Interpreting to begin Fall 2027. The position is tenure-bearing through a Certificate of Continuous Employment (CCE) following the sixth annual reappointment. Lecturers become eligible for promotion to Senior Lecturer after eight years of full-time continuous service, and for the rank of Doctoral Lecturer upon completion of a Ph.D. The appointed faculty member will perform teaching and related faculty functions, share responsibility for departmental and College committee work, and other duties as assigned by the chair.

Responsibilities

• Teach a 4/4 load (eight undergraduate courses per year).
• Actively recruit, advise, and mentor Spanish majors, minors, and Certificate students.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues, the department, and the College.
• Contribute to the goals of the college through leadership, community service, and/or lived experiences.
• Foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment for students from a wide range of backgrounds.
• Adhere to John Jay College’s Seven Principles for a Culturally Responsive, Inclusive, and Anti-Racist Curriculum.

Qualifications

By the date of appointment, applicants must possess a Master's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent non-U.S. institution in one of the following:

• Translation and/or Interpreting Studies;
• A related discipline with a demonstrable academic focus in translation and/or interpreting; or
• Another discipline together with demonstrable professional experience in translation and/or interpreting.

Applicants must also have the ability to effectively teach in at least two of the following areas at all levels of undergraduate instruction:

• Spanish translation (general and/or legal);
• Spanish interpreting (general and/or legal); and
• Spanish for heritage learners.

The successful candidate may also be expected to teach Spanish (L2) language courses at all levels of undergraduate instruction. Candidates are expected to bring enthusiasm and demonstrated commitment to both teaching and service. All CUNY employees must reside within a commutable distance to their campus.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience teaching specialized Spanish-English translation and interpreting (legal, medical, business).
• Experience using innovative teaching methods and/or curricular design to effectively engage a diverse student body.
• Experience and/or interest in developing internships, community outreach, and service learning.
• Ability to teach effectively in different modalities.
• Ph.D. candidates (including ABDs) are encouraged to apply.

While Lecturers at CUNY do not have an expectation of scholarly productivity, the department welcomes and will support applicants with active research agendas.

Pay

$57,039 - $91,753 (As of 9/1/2026: $59,035 - $94,965). Salary commensurate with education and credentials.
