Doctoral Lecturer in Spanish – Specialist in Heritage Learners, Modern Languages and Literatures Department

About the role

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at John Jay College-CUNY seeks an instructor at the rank of Doctoral Lecturer with experience teaching Spanish for heritage learners. The position is tenure-bearing through a Certificate of Continuous Employment (CCE) following the sixth annual reappointment. Lecturers become eligible for promotion to the rank of Senior Lecturer after eight years of full-time continuous service. The appointed faculty member will perform teaching and related faculty functions, share responsibility for departmental and College committee work, and other duties as assigned by the chair.

Responsibilities

• Teach a 4/4 load (eight undergraduate courses per year), including Spanish for heritage learners at all levels of undergraduate instruction and potentially Spanish (L2) language courses.
• Actively recruit, advise, and mentor Spanish majors, minors, and Certificate students.
• Collaborate with colleagues, the department, and the College to foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
• Contribute to the goals of the college through leadership, community service, and/or lived experiences.
• Engage in departmental and College committee work.

Qualifications

• PhD degree in Spanish linguistics with a focus in Heritage learners or a related discipline from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or equivalent non-U.S. institution by the date of appointment.
• Ability to effectively teach Spanish for heritage learners at all levels of undergraduate instruction.
• Enthusiasm and demonstrated commitment to both teaching and service.
• Must reside within a commutable distance to the campus.

Preferred Qualifications

• Three years of experience teaching Spanish for Heritage learners.
• Experience using innovative teaching methods to engage a diverse student body.
• Experience in curriculum design.
• Demonstrated ability to teach effectively in diverse modalities.
• Experience and interest in developing internships, community outreach, and service learning.
• Active research agenda (though not required for the position).

Pay

$62,241 - $97,487 (As of 9/1/2026: $64,419 - $100,899). Salary commensurate with education and credentials.
