The Department of American Indian Studies at California State University San Marcos seeks a part-time lecturer for Fall 2026 to teach AIS 230: American Indian Art and Contemporary Issues. The course introduces contemporary issues in American Indian art, including cultural authenticity and ownership, legal foundations to protect American Indian artwork and artists, cultural misappropriation and theft, and (mis)representation in the marketplace. It develops critical reading skills to analyze the social, material, and cultural context that informs artistic production resulting from cultural contact in various historical periods.

About the role

This position is a part-time lecturer role for Fall 2026. The course is taught in-person and falls on Tuesday's and Thursday's, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

Responsibilities

  • Teach AIS 230: American Indian Art and Contemporary Issues in Fall 2026
  • Develop critical reading skills to analyze the social, material, and cultural context of artistic production
  • Introduce students to contemporary issues in American Indian art
  • Address topics such as cultural authenticity and ownership, legal foundations, cultural misappropriation, and (mis)representation in the marketplace

Requirements

  • A master's degree or equivalent in American Indian Studies or related discipline
  • Higher education teaching experience preferred
  • Preference given to applicants demonstrating intercultural competence and a commitment to serving the campus community

Qualifications

  • Interdisciplinary knowledge of American Indian Studies
  • Ability to engage students in discussions about cultural issues and contemporary art
  • Experience with online learning platforms and tools

Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple courses and responsibilities

Benefits

The anticipated hiring salary range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with education and experience. The salary schedule information for the Lecturer – Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges:

  • CSU Classification Salary Range: Lecturer A - AY: $5,507 - $6,677 per full-time month
  • CSU Classification Salary Range: Lecturer B - AY: $6,221 - $13,224 per full-time month

The anticipated hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with education and experience.

Pay

Salary commensurate with degree level and experience.

Schedule

The position is for Fall 2026, with classes held on Tuesday's and Thursday's, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
