About the role

The Lead Ambulatory Pharmacy Technician provides integrated support to patients and pharmacists by taking a “hands-on” approach to total quality patient care. In addition to completing day-to-day pharmacy technician tasks, they train all new employees and students in the Tech Training Program, lead technician teams, and report on performance and personnel needs to the Operations Manager and Training Coordinator.

Responsibilities

• Train new technicians and students enrolled in the training program.
• Answer staff questions concerning departmental policies and procedures for URAC and ACHC compliance.
• Coordinate training schedules for all new hires, ensuring access to necessary systems and completion of all competencies.
• Ensure new technicians sign all required policy attestations at orientation and help maintain employee files.
• Manage new and yearly competencies and ensure staff completion.
• Provide feedback to the Lead Technician, Training Coordinator, and Operations Manager on new hires and student training progress.
• Support pharmacists and technicians in daily duties and cover any technician role in emergency or short-staffed situations.
• Fill in as Ambulatory Pharmacy Technical Operations Coordinator when needed.
• Complete monthly reporting requirements, including:
  • Temperature and humidity monitoring for rooms, refrigerators, and freezers.
  • Phone metrics and prescription statistics.
  • Delivery records and state regulatory updates.
  • Complaint and near-miss logs.
• Perform additional administrative assignments as directed by the pharmacy manager or director.
• Provide excellent customer service, interpret and enter prescriptions, and clarify orders with pharmacists or clinicians as needed.
• Label and fill prescriptions for pharmacist verification and perform pharmaceutical calculations.
• Identify medications requiring special storage or handling (e.g., hazardous or refrigerated medications).
• Assemble supplies for select medications, such as sharps containers, needles, syringes, alcohol swabs, and Band-Aids.
• Prepare medications for delivery to patients and departments, including home delivery when needed.
• Answer, resolve, and triage inbound inquiries; provide outbound therapy and medication adherence check-ups.
• Secure refill prescriptions and resolve insurance-related issues; assist patients with financial assistance.
• Maintain pharmacy inventory, including drug ordering and receiving.
• Communicate directly with patients to address medication awareness and concerns.
• Input data, perform adjudication on test claims, and prepare action plans for follow-up.
• Manage, organize, and update relevant data using database applications.
• Identify trends, resolve problems, recommend improvements, and implement change.
• Actively participate in process improvement initiatives and act as a value-added business partner to stakeholders.
• Protect organizational value by keeping information confidential.
• Update job knowledge through educational opportunities, professional publications, networks, and organizations.
• Perform other duties as assigned for the betterment of the company.

Requirements

• Registered as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Rhode Island.
• National certification as a CPhT (Certified Pharmacy Technician).
• 1+ years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician (5+ years preferred).
