About the role

The Lead Therapist position at Ellie Mental Health in Birmingham combines an active clinical caseload with on-site leadership, clinical consultation and supervision, clinician development, clinic oversight, and structured community outreach.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a minimum of 20 clinical hours per week
  • Provide high-quality, ethical, and client-centered mental health services
  • Complete clinical documentation accurately and within required timeframes
  • Maintain strong client engagement, retention, and continuity of care
  • Model strong clinical judgment, professionalism, compliance, and documentation practices
  • Serve as the consistent, visible on-site leader for the Birmingham clinic
  • Provide clinical consultation to Birmingham clinicians
  • Provide formal supervision to assigned limited-license clinicians
  • Conduct regular clinician check-ins and monitor team needs, morale, satisfaction, and barriers
  • Follow up with new clinicians after onboarding and initial training
  • Monitor caseload development and identify issues affecting referrals, scheduling, productivity, documentation, compliance, or client retention
  • Provide coaching, direction, and accountability
  • Escalate significant clinical, personnel, performance, or operational concerns to the Clinic Director
  • Strengthen communication between the Birmingham clinic and the broader organization
  • Maintain awareness of day-to-day clinic operations and address routine on-site concerns
  • Promote a professional, welcoming, organized, and collaborative environment
  • Identify facilities, equipment, or office concerns and communicate them to the appropriate internal leader
  • Share relevant facilities and operational updates with Birmingham staff
  • Monitor office utilization and identify scheduling or space concerns
  • Help ensure clinic processes and expectations are followed consistently
  • Develop relationships with local referral partners and community organizations
  • Conduct consistent outreach throughout Birmingham and surrounding communities
  • Represent Ellie Mental Health at meetings, networking opportunities, and community events
  • Track outreach activities, relationships, and next steps in the designated system
  • Meet established outreach activity and performance expectations
  • Communicate referral-partner feedback and identify growth opportunities
  • Cookout outreach with clinic leadership and the organization’s broader growth strategy

Qualifications

  • Current Michigan license permitting independent mental health practice
  • Master’s degree or higher in counseling, social work, psychology, marriage and family therapy, or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a consistent clinical caseload
  • Prior experience with professional outreach, referral development, networking, community engagement, or business development
  • Strong leadership, communication, organization, and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to provide direct, constructive feedback while maintaining strong professional relationships
  • Strong clinical documentation and compliance practices
  • Ability to balance clinical, leadership, administrative, supervisory, and outreach responsibilities
  • Ability and willingness to work on-site five days per week

Preferred Qualifications

  • Qualification to supervise limited-license clinicians under applicable Michigan requirements
  • Formal clinical supervision training or willingness to complete the necessary training
  • Experience as a clinical supervisor, lead clinician, program leader, or agency-based manager
  • Experience supporting clinician onboarding, development, productivity, or performance
  • Experience in a community mental health, group practice, nonprofit, or agency setting
  • Knowledge of revenue-cycle management, insurance billing, utilization management, or clinical operations
  • Experience with documentation compliance, medical necessity, audits, or quality assurance

Pay

Total earnings will vary based on completed clinical hours, leadership hours, and overall performance. Candidates consistently meeting the position’s clinical and leadership expectations may reasonably expect annual cash compensation of approximately $75,000–$95,000 or more. Higher sustained clinical production may result in higher earnings, while lower production may result in lower compensation. This is an estimated earning opportunity and not a guaranteed annual salary.

Schedule and Work Structure

Approximately 35–40 total working hours per week. Minimum of 20 completed clinical hours per week. Remaining time will be allocated among leadership, supervision, clinician support, administration, outreach, onboarding follow-up, and clinic coordination. Responsibilities and time allocation may vary based on clinic needs. On-site presence is required five days per week. Daily hours may be structured flexibly around client schedules, therapist needs, clinic coverage, outreach activities, and operational priorities.
