Lead Telecommunications Installer

About the role

The Installer IV position is an experienced professional who independently executes complex field activities related to installing, maintaining, and servicing telecommunications equipment. This role requires extensive industry knowledge and the ability to guide less experienced installers.

Responsibilities

• Understand and follow Telamon’s established safety practices and procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Perform additions, removals, and modifications on working equipment and circuits, including:
  • Circuit modifications
  • Software additions or upgrades
  • Power transition work
  • Addition or removal of batteries
  • Addition or removal of circuits on working power distribution sources
• Install, configure, and integrate telecommunications equipment such as switches, routers, fiber optics, and power systems in central office environments.
• Mount racks, frames, and shelves, ensuring all equipment is securely and correctly installed.
• Perform cable installation, termination, labeling, and lacing, adhering to industry standards.
• Test and troubleshoot fiber/copper installations, including power verification and equipment power-up.
• Evaluate systems to determine efficiency, reliability, and compatibility with existing systems using tools like OTDRs, power meters, and spectrum analyzers.
• Maintain quality awareness and implement quality control processes, including in-process and final quality inspections.
• Read and stay current on installation documentation, interpret drawings, plans, and specifications, and perform retrofits and upgrades for existing infrastructure.
• Make recommendations based on applicable codes, standards, and best practices, and discuss media selection and implementation implications.
• Resolve job specification and/or drawing problems, and mark/correct office record drawings.
• Accurately document installation, testing, and maintenance activities, including as-built drawings and change logs.
• Execute the essential duties and responsibilities of Installer III, plus additional leadership duties:
  • Provide work instruction and assignments to Level I, II, and III Installers.
  • Serve as Site Crew Leader or Installation in-charge person as needed.
  • Prepare Methods of Procedure (MOP) and write Job Information Memorandums (JIMs).
  • Conduct work assignments professionally and coordinate with engineers, project managers, and other team members.
• Inventory all job-related material and perform tasks such as addition/removal of non-powered equipment, wiring, and connections (on non-working equipment only).
• Lead verification/continuity testing and analyze job specifications and drawings.
• Provide guidance and training to less experienced Installers.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• 2 years of electronics training from a technical trade school or military.
• Minimum of 6 years of field service or equivalent combination of education and experience, as determined by the Installation Manager or Director. Exceptions may be made for individuals who completed Telamon’s Installer Academy Program.
• Demonstrate proficiency in relevant Network Elements (1, 2, 3, or 4).
• Experience leading, training, and motivating less experienced installers.
• Management assessment and approval of proficiency in Level IV skills.

Skills

• Proficiency in installing cables, racks, power systems, and grounding systems.
• Ability to perform equipment rack mounting, cable lacing, and termination.
• Comprehensive knowledge of the installation process and ability to read, interpret, and understand technical drawings and documentation.
• Familiarity with industry standards (AT&T TP-76300 / 76409 / Telcordia GR1275 / Verizon IP72202).
• Completion of “Basic Installation” training or equivalent on-the-job training, as well as Safety, Business Code of Conduct, Quality Assurance, and Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) training.
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve technical issues.
• Meticulous attention to detail to ensure compliance with industry standards.
• Advanced knowledge of current network products and ability to lead and direct less experienced team members.
• Time management skills to meet project deadlines.
• Aptitude and interest in technology with the ability to grasp and apply technical concepts.
• Proficiency operating computers, tablets, and MS Office software.
• Effective communication with team members, supervisors, and other departments.
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record and proof of insurance.
• Ability to track and record work hours using time-tracking software.
• Good eye-hand coordination, manual dexterity, and precision to work with a variety of hand tools.

Schedule

• Must be available to travel as much as 50% - 75%, including overnight stays away from home for 1-2 weeks at a time, including weekends.
• Requires ability to work early morning shifts, occasional evening shifts, and infrequent weekend work.
• Must have reliable transportation to transport minor job-related tools to work locations.

Pay

$34-$38 per hour (non-exempt/hourly).

Physical Demands

• Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. and may be required to lift as much as 100 lbs on occasion.
• Ability to work on ladders and in confined spaces.
• Work with and around electrical wires and ESD products in a safe manner.
• Ability to work onsite in central offices, construction, or installation sites.
• Requires fine motor skills and manual dexterity for gripping tools and assembling small components.
• Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, squat, lift, crawl, push, and pull.
