Lead Technician

Reporting to the Wind Site Manager, the Lead Technician contributes to the day-to-day operations of the Ocotillo wind site by participating in and monitoring mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical component maintenance and substation activities for wind turbines. The primary objective is to maintain safe, effective, efficient, and profitable wind turbine operations.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, abide by, and enforce safe work practices related to wind plants, personnel, turbine repairs, maintenance, and balance of plant activities.
  • Inspect completed repairs and scheduled maintenance for quality assurance.
  • Troubleshoot complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical problems on Clearway-owned equipment.
  • Perform all mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical component maintenance, repair, and replacement, ensuring compliance with proper procedures and Clearway standards.
  • Use proper tooling and equipment to perform troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance activities.
  • Support site operations, including leading crews, as directed by the Site Manager with minimal supervision.
  • Assist in training and developing lower-level operation and maintenance personnel.
  • Ensure crews document all work performed, parts used, and time spent using computer-based service reporting procedures.
  • Update manuals, work instructions, and technical wind turbine data.
  • Read and understand electrical schematics and wiring diagrams; mentor others as needed.
  • Monitor site conditions, contractors, and personnel to maximize revenue and minimize downtime during repairs and maintenance.
  • Ensure crews maintain all tools and equipment in good working order and well organized.
  • Safely perform Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) and mentor lower-level technicians in LOTO procedures.
  • Perform balance of plant, O&M facility, and switchyard maintenance, repairs, and inspections as required.
  • Work a flexible schedule, including weeknights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Ensure all vehicles and equipment are properly maintained and serviced.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED is required.
  • Associate's degree (electrical or technical) and 2+ years of turbine experience, or 5+ years of wind turbine experience required.
  • 1+ years of independent turbine troubleshooting experience and the ability to troubleshoot turbines without assistance.
  • Able to climb towers unassisted up to 300 feet.
  • Comfortable standing outside the nacelle and nosecone at the top of the turbine and working in adverse weather conditions.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and a good driving record.
  • Able to work with electrical wires and differentiate between colored wires.
  • Able to safely work in a wide range of adverse climates and environments.
  • Able to travel as required.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain wind turbines at a high availability factor.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and fluent in creating, editing, and modifying Word and Excel documents.
  • In-depth understanding of wind turbine components, including the pitch system, computerized control system, and power conversion unit, as well as knowledge of OEM-approved mechanical maintenance methods and practices.
  • Skills to perform mechanical and electrical equipment repairs and guide others to do the same.

Skills

  • Previous experience in SAP is preferred.

Pay

Salary Range Across all U.S. Locations: $82,800—$98,100 USD. This role is eligible to earn an annual cash bonus, subject to personal and company performance goals.

Schedule

This role requires a flexible schedule, including weeknights, weekends, and holidays as needed. Office-based employees typically work together in-office on Tuesdays and Thursdays for collaboration, community-building, and company-provided meals and events. Site-based employees collaborate in-person daily to maintain operations and foster local community relationships.
