About the role

The Y Head Start Teacher contributes to the Y's mission by planning, managing, and supervising early childhood classrooms, adhering to federal and state standards, and fostering the social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and creative development of children.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and manage early childhood classroom structure, including lesson plans, schedules, routines, and transitions.
  • Lead the classroom, including support associates, while ensuring adherence to federal and state standards and the Y's philosophy and approach to early childhood education.
  • Ensure the health, welfare, and safety of children in the program.
  • Create an environment that fosters the social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and creative development of each child in your care.
  • Contribute to the Y and the broader community by working with economically disadvantaged children, helping them prepare for success in school and life.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of early childhood experience.
  • An interest in the well-being and education of young children.
  • Enthusiasm, patience, good humor, and good judgment.
  • A BA/BS or AA degree in Early Childhood Education, Human Services, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • A 90-hour child care certification and 9 hours in communication.
  • A Child Development Associate certificate (preferred).

Qualifications

  • Passion for making a difference in the lives of young children.
  • Ability to clearly communicate and effectively listen to children, parents/guardians, members, and other Y associates.
  • Agreement to abide by The Code of Conduct with Youth, which includes treating youth with respect and fairness, avoiding inappropriate interactions, and adhering to established standards of affection.
  • Completion of training on child abuse prevention and compliance with legal reporting requirements.
